    Posted: 04 Dec 2009 at 7:45pm
I have noticed a couple differences in the WD-45 transmissions. The common WD-45 transmission has a curved shifter that narrows down with a small round ball on the end  all one piece for the rubber knob to go over.

There were a few not many out there that had shifter rod that was shorter, curved and kept the same diameter and did norrow down with a little ball on the end like the common 45 shifter lever.

The tractor I noticed this on was a late 50's model. Was there something different about these transmissions? Can any of you WD-45 experts explain this.... was this a better transmission to get a hold of?

Please expalin, Thanks Jim

Well Jim, You have me on this one, I have owned and worked on lots of WD, WD45's and all I know of is the ser# brake on the WD trans at 127007 to the newer WD(in late 1952) with the bent shifter trans like all the WD45s had. With that said lots of in field changes have happened over the years. maybe you found some kind of aftermarket built shifter. Please post a pic of the shifter you are talking about, I like to stay on top of that's out there. And maybe a ser# too, please.

That shifter came from the Parts Dept probably after 1965 or 1970......maybe even later than that.

We bought one of those from Allis in the early 80's, it had two grooves milled in at the pivot point.  But, you couldn't put the rubber knob on it.

I have one of those shifters sitting on my parts shelf, I was told it was a replacement one that was sold by the Dealer, it has a big round ball on the end of it, maybe 1.5" in diameter

Hi Guy's, thanks for the feed back. Once I figure out how to easily post photos I will take some. This is still different than what you guy's are explaining so I can't waite to some photo's. The internals inside the shifter tower are even different and won't interchange from one trtanny to the other so figure that out?? aswell as the tranny inside has differences. I think I might give Barney Taylor a call heard he have an answer to this?

Thanks,

Jim

Purchased a wd45 shift lever from our local dealer within the last year.  It had the curve, but was the same diameter from the shifter boot to the tip.  Instead of the normal push-on shifter knob, it required a screw on knob.  Didn`t use it on my restoration project, didn`t like the way it looked.  Believe it was around $125.00.  If anyone wants to make an offer, it`s for sale.

Instead of buying these ugly shifters send yours to me and I will repair the grooves in the sides and repair the ball if it is worn. I can also go through the shifter top and repair it if it is crossing gears and locking up. I can also take the D14-15 side plate and modify it to go in gear deeper.JP  P.S. It won't cost $125.00 to repair the shifter either.JP

I guess I have not put a new factory shifter in a 45, I just rebuilt them. Just go's to show you are never to old to learn. LOL  It sounds like rebuilding the old one is better than buying a new one.
