Just talked to the machine shop that has my D17D head and they say that 4 of the pistons are hitting the head. 4 of them are clean on top and I thought the reason was from coolant washing them clean since there appears to be nothing imbedded in the pistons. They tell me they can offset grind the wrist pin bushings up to about .005. This is new territory for me. What now? Have the bushings offset? What about shaving the tops of the pistons? Where should the pistons be from the deck of the block at TDC?

Has the engine been overhauled?? Maybe it has the wrong pistons. I would look into getting a new set of pistons, or maybe call Bill or Brenda at Sandy Lake andd see if they can give you the spec, then you can pop the 4 pistons out and mic them and see if the pin boos is in the right spot.

4 pistons hitting the head??   You better tear the motor down alot further, something sounds terribly wrong. I would say something with the wrong pistons on 4 holes. I have a 262 gas apart at the moment and all the pistons are about 3/8' below the deck.

The engine is coming out to take a closer look. I'm about 99% sure it's been overhauled, but it sat for a long time and the sleeves got rusty. Now they're all pitted. Me being a professional mechanic, I can't leave it that way, so I was thinking if all is well below, I'd do an in frame overhaul on it. I have noticed there is a range of serial numbers on some on line sites that use a different part# other than what must be common. I guess what I need to know is what is the spec for piston to head clearance. I figure I can measure the clearance with clay and tightening the head down on the old gasket and then measure the thickness of the squeezed out clay. That's how engine builders measure valve clearance to piston on hi-po racing engines anyway.

Matt, is the 262 gas head flat with no combustion chamber like a 226 and 201 4cyl head? If it is, that would account for the distance below the deck to lower the compression ratio for gasoline.

On that engine the pistons do come above deck height, so head gasket thickness is critical.  I'm going to do this from memory so don't hold me to it, but the number I remember is .021" above deck maximum. 
Most problems can be solved with the proper application of high explosives.

Thanks Ted. I'm going to do some measuring tonight. I have a Fel-Pro head set. I'm also going to try the clay depth measuring test to see what I get. A while back someone posted that they had a custom copper head gasket made form a place in Texas I think.

....BRIAN   There are several different thickness of headgaskets available from Agco.  Ck your serial # and make sure the 1 you have is right for your tractor.  Mine was replaced with the wrong gasket and it cost me a complete overhaul.

My question is why are 4 out of 6 different from the others? Cyl. run out is critical on the 262's for proper head gasket seal. The piston run out will determine compresion and result in a clean, good starting engine or one with low compresion that your never fully satisfied with. Still, why are the 2 not matching up to the other 4.
 
Sounds to me that a complete engine kit is needed and decking the block, cutting new counterbores for the cyl's, and turning the tops of the pistons to correct the runout may be needed to do it right.

Rod bearings are worn on the 4 pistons causing them to hit the head when the rpm's are up. Pull the pan and check the bearings.
 There are 2 different head gaskets, a .035 for gas and a .065 for diesal.

Before the head gasket issue, this engine would start without any help down into the 30's. Some other thoughts I had were if the engine ran away once and the rods stretched. It does have dents from the inside of the pan and a hole that has been brazed.

I measured the old gasket .055. New gasket .066. I measured the stand out of a couple pistons. 1 of them was .060 the other .050. I guess it's down to block having been surfaced excessively, wrong pistons, or stretched connecting rods.
