I have #1 cylinder oil fowling out,,#2 is carbon fowled some,,and #3 and 4 are clean as a whistle!
The plugs in 3 and 4 look like brand new. I'm considering pulling the head and checking the valve guides in and seeing if the valve stems are worn. It only smokes when it idles for a while, once i throttle it up, it clears up,but then I loose #1 cylinder. Now, I don't put a lead additive in the gas,and I don't know if it's ever had hardened guides put in it, so I'm thinking that may be a place to start? What do you gear head AC guys think?

How is the compression? Could it be the rings?

I would take the valve cover off and see if there is any sludge near 1&2 causing the oil to drain down the valve stem. Cal in Ct.

OK,,I will check compression and also check the valve stems and see what we have here!
Thanks guys!

What plug are you using. I used to have trouble with the CA fouling 1 plug after a few hours on new plugs. I put the next hotter plug in and never touched a plug the rest of the mowing season. The CA sat for 10 years before I started using it. The more I used it, the better it ran. The CA had ring problems so if your's is valve guides, hotter plugs might not do as much good.

sounds like what I had, turned out #1 had a scored cylinder wall. Cost less to replace motor than rebuild. I now have a WD45 motor in my WD. hope your problem is not that bad.

You don't use hardened guides, its hardened seats for the valves with no lead fuel. You aren't working it hard enough to need the hard seats.
When to adjacent cylinders have similar problems its often the head gasket is blown between them, and likely in this case adding an oil passage that's leaking more to #1. Valve guides tend to leak more with a high manifold vacuum and the highest manifold vacuum is while the engine is coming down in speed from running fast at the time the throttle is closed. So if you goose it, then close the throttle, and get a puff of blue smoke as it gets down to idle speed, that's valve guides, specifically intake valve guides. Seals can do wonders. Guides can do wonders, but then you have to do a complete valve job cutting the seats to be concentric with the new valve guides. And probably break for new valves too. It could a rocker arm problem where #1 exhaust isn't opening much if at all, but I bet on the head gasket. Adding a so called lead additive to the gas gets you more rapidly fowled plugs and a thinner wallet, that vendor more profit, does nothing for engine performance or longevity. Gerald J. |

Good points Gerald, I'm not as familiar with these engines as others so I appreciate the input on this!
wouldn't the compression test also indicate a possible head gasket issue?

Gerald covered most things well . might also do a leak down test with compressed air but if oil burning is the problem from guides this will not show up. Fouled plugs can also be from leaks if the plug is burnt.

OK,,,,the verdict is in!
Gerald,,,#1's exhaust valve screw had backed it's self off and was barely opening the valve! #2 wasn't much better, plus, I had a spark plug that had a small crack along the side of the electrode and was firing down in the plug and not at the point where it should! after setting the clearance back on the two valves and a new set of plugs,,I'm pullin' wheelies now!!,,,well,,,not really,,but she's runnin' real darn good now!

Oh yeah,,,and I STILL don't know for sure where the oil was coming from,,but I ran her for quite a while and never saw a hint of it!
I'll keep an eye on that though.
