    Posted: 28 Nov 2009 at 12:25pm
I'm trying to remove the steering wheel off of our 6080 to replace the instrument panel and it wont budge. I was finally able to remove the nut using an impact gun however i cant get the wheel itself off.  Just an FYI this tractor was stored outside uncovered without the plastic wheel cover for God only knows how long before we bought it so i think the spline is rusted up real bad.

Any ideas are welcome also if anyone knows where i can get a new wheel for after i screw this one up that would be appreciated

thanks

generally speaking, I find a 3 jaw puller works the best. I'm assuming that you already have sprayed the threads and spline with the lubricant of your choice. Get the puller on there and tighten up the screw on the puller tight enough to put some pressure on the wheel, but not so tight that you screw up the wheel. Then take a hammer and give the screw on the puller a good whack on the end. A few good swats should pop the wheel off the column. It's tapered so it won't loosen up it will just fall off. If you'ed wrecked the wheel already any one of the advertiser's on this sight will be able to get you a new wheel. Good luck

Good advice above. Make sure you use some sort of penetrating fluid numerous times. If the wheel has some threaded holes in it (not familiar with this steering wheel) like a lot do you can use a bar puller with two bolts and that would be easier on the steering wheel than a jaw style puller. A bar puller would also allow you to apply more pressure. I have pulled up on the steering wheel while someone else hits the shaft using a big punch and hammer. Be sure to leave the nut on however or you will go for a ride if the wheel breaks loose. Good Luck
