Most of us on here have agreed that the Krylon 1820 is a real, real close match for Persian Orange 1, and it holds up really well. If you want to use the rattle can, thats the way to do it. If you want a good quality restoration job, use a spray gun with good auto quality paint. Don't forget proper preparation is a key to any good paint job.

I don't think either Valspar rattle can orange from TSC is correct for a G if you want to match PO#1. Some folks like the Rattle Can shade of Orange that comes from Krylon. Having used it on the Build a B parts and being a painter, with a eye for color, all my life. It is not a real real close match for PO#1. If you want to use a inexpensive Alkyd Industrial Enamel Lowes can scan, mix and match a dry PO#1 sample. Enamel Hardener can be found at TSC And Attwoods.
Speaking of Attwoods. They carry the Vansickle line of tractor paint here in Kilgore Texas. They have both PO#1 and PO#2 in spraycans. At least the can caps are different enough to tell the difference. I wanted to try some but put it off till later. Anybody used any tractor paint from Attwoods Farm Stores?

Ken, I have used the VanSickle PO#2 on my tractors and have had no problems with it. I have it on a 38 B and a 44 C. I bought the 38 restored but needed some touch up and it seemed that the person who restored it, used the same paint, as it matched perfectly.

I have some of the Valspar paint right now. It's P.O. #2 which isn't "correct" for anything older than 1960. I don't think it's as good as the urethane paint I put on my Oliver, but for a working machine it would be fine. I got it because I repaired my rims and put new tires on the D17 and just wanted to cover the bare metal after sandblasting. I'll use more of it when I put the head back on. I just don't like to put ugly parts back after I've gone through the hassle of refurbishing them, especially when I have a blasting cabinet to quickly and easily remove all the pld paint and rust.

Somebody posted this chart on here awhile back. I think the 2 middle colors look closest to PO#1, the color you would want.

I've gotten the Van Sickle PO#1 & #2 at Orscheln for $4.49 a can. They also carry the corporate orange in the rattle can.

It was me who posted the rattle can color comparison awhile back. I've picked up a few others since then and will post an update eventually. To my eye, none of them are a great match to PO2 or especially PO1, based on comparing them directly to meticulously restored tractors i've seen at shows. While PO1 tends to be somewhat "brown" compared to the "redder" shade of PO2, the Van Sickle PO1 is looks "too brown" to me. Some day I'd like to get a chip of the well-accepted PPG versions of PO1 and PO2 to put in the chart.
Ken, I "think" the Van Sickle paint at your Attwoods is probably the same that we buy here locally at Orscheln's, all three versions are in the above chart. The Tisco paint is made by Van Sickle and probably the same. In the rattle can version it's extremely slow drying and not really great quality relative to some other aerosols. I have used the Valspar restoration paint and it looks good on my working tractors and doesn't sun fade. For the money, it's a good paint. Kraig (WI)

I didn't think the PO#2 Van Sickle was too bad a match. I agree the PO#1 appears a little dark/brown, but wasn't too bad for a small job. I've not been happy with the quality of tractor/implement paint from TSC in the past.

Back when CT Farm and Country and Quality Farm and Country were still in business, their paint was made by Iowa Paint in Des Moines. Tisco also used IA Paint back then. Even the Bush Hog folks used Iowa Paint. It was fine as long as the machine was stored inside. Back then I didn't have a place for the CA inside and it faded really bad. TSC might have used Iowa Paint too.
Kraig, how long ago did you apply the Valspar paint and is it on equipment that sets out? |

i bought the VALSPAR restoration paint with harderner. Goes on real nice, and dries fast. I bought the "allis chamlers" orange and it looks like corporate to me. I used it to paint a small Economy tractor and a trailer, not a B Allis.

Like them all, but love the "B"s.

I have used it and it fades. My older D 10 could be the cover jacket for Dolly Pattin's "Coat of Many Colors" song;; because of TSC paint. But it is better than rust, until I retire and paint it right.

Would the rust-oleum orange paint be close to my 7000 series tractors? |

Morris,
Do you have an air compressor? IF so, your best bet is to buy a paint gun and shoot the paint on, rather than using rattle cans. Harbor Freight has a $9 paint gun that is decent, but does need set-up by a professional. If you are interested, I could set it up for you if you wanted to ship it to me. I am a professional autobody painter and I own many high end guns, but I do own about 10 of the harbor freight $9 guns that I use for primer and industrial and even the occasional car if I want to show off. (why so many?) I bought 3 guns to start so I could mix PPG NCP-271 primer in 3 separate batches, for shooting several vehicles at teh same time, and having a fresh gun loaded with primer for each coat. NCP primer turns to jello in a paint gun in about 30-45 minutes, so you have to move fast, but have to give it 10-15 minutes between coats. so the consistency varies between the first coat and last coat, unless you mix new batches for every coat. but anyway... Paint guns are very simple to use, and very simple to maintain, and clean. Cleaning a paint gun is probably everyone's biggest downfall, but if you buy some laquer thinner with the sole intention of using it to clean up your gun, you will be fine. Just get a gallon of laquer thinner, and use it liberally to clean. Don't be afraid to waste it. |
