How important is it to have breaks on both axels of a tandem axel trailer? We are looking at 18' trailers to tow behind our motor home. One dealer says that it is required, in this state, for over 3000 lb. The next dealer is selling them with breaks on only axel.

Dusty, just my opinion, but you CAN'T have too much brakes hauling equipment, the small price increase is well worth your safety. Your motor home may have the body weight/braking ability to stop it fine, but one day it may be towed behind something lighter.

My opinion also, but I usualy am just as concerned about stopping as pulling. I would not think cost would be a deciding factor for brakes on both axels as opposed to just one. Got them on both axles of my flatbed 18 footer.

Laws change from state to state, BUT if you plan to pull it with equipment and with anything beyond a RV plate, you will be subject to DOT regs. Now the requirement is brakes on all axels.
Friend bought horse trailer with tandem axels, only brakes on one, when I showed him MN law he want back to dealer and they installed the brakes at no cost to him as they had not known the law ..
