About a month ago I bought a 185D 3250 hrs looks nice etc. It doesn't run as smoothly as the 180 but as it had not been run very much at all the last 6 years I was hoping that with some use and treated fuel it would work out of it. Today I hooked the 7 shank CP to it to see how it would do and about 10 minutes into it it lost power and the engine just continued to loose RPM and stopped. It will start right up and run for a short time before we go through the same cycle. I changed fuel filter although I had to take the one from the 180 which is quite new (20 hrs). When I pump the fuel up with the hand pump I can hear fuel running back into the tank - is that right? I also hear a little ticking that if you put your hand on the fuel pump you can tell that that's where it is coming from. Any suggestions on where to go from here? Thanks

Could be plugged fuel outlet at bottom of tank. Mine done same thing. I screwed outlet pipe out and blew air into tank with a rag around air line to ensure more pressure. Blew out a black sludge that was thick like algae. Have not had a problem since. HTH Tracy martin

Had the same issue with a 6080, tank had crap in the bottom that randomly plugged the outlet.

Check the return line from the injectors and make sure you don't have the classic coffee grinds in there. If so, it's the governor ring on the injection pump.

I'am with Hurst on this one. It could be a plugged in the tank but I bet its the pieces in the return.

The runs for a little while and dies just screams plugged fuel return outlet on the pump.

I'm with Brian. Plugged check valve on the return line from the pump. Usually caused by the govenor O ring comming apart and plugging the check valve. Loosen the inspection plate on the side of the pump and releive the pressure. With the plate loose and fuel leaking, and the tractor keeps running, will confirm that this is the problem. Been there a few times.

Thanks for all the good ideas. I'm not a dsl mechanic so when you talk about the return line are you talking about the line back to the tank or does it go back to the pump. Also, had to move a couple bales and at lower RPM it ran fine other than it still is not running as smooth as I'd like.

I think 10 minutes is too long of run time for governor ring to cause problem. Usally only a minute or too tops for that to happen. JMHO Tracy Martin

Hand a leaf in the bottom of the tank cause this one time. But have also have heard of the foil comming off the top of treatment cans. Ending up in the full system causing all kinds of problems.

Ya..i'm with Charlie and Tracy. You said the fuel filter, but didnt mention the sediment bowl. Our 180 was idlin' rough and I was thinkin about that ring in the pump, but dad cleaned the sediment bowl and wah lah! solved. -Wes

I had similar trouble, would run good then start to stall out; was told to pull the sediment bowl assembly from the fuel tank by Dr. Allis and look for debris in the fitting to the bowl. It was there as was a small mound of crap out of the tank, runs like a top now. The return fitting is on the radiator end of the injector pump on top of the rectangular cover, there is a fuel line from the nozzles that seems to attach there but the fuel actually runs up in that line and back to the tank along with bleed fuel from the nozzles.

i had a d14 do this a few yrs ago.. it would start and run fine.. but once i tried to give it more gas it would die down. it wouldnt have enough power to pull its self around the yard. took the fuel line off at the carb and found nothing. ended up taking off the sediment bowl and found a lady bug upside down in the inlet . got rid of her and my problem went away ;-)
