Has the generator been replaced with a alternator? If it has then you need to get a diode and put it in the wire that goes between the key and the alternator. My bother-n-law had one that did the same thing. Talked to my starter and alternator rebuilder he had a dioide adaptor that plugged in to the alternator and the plug for the alternator plugged in to it, I think it was $10 or $20. |

sounds like your coil wire is connected to the wrong side of the ing. switch leaving it hot all the time. |
|
been there done that, not doing it again...

Follow the wire from the coil back to the ignition switch and remove it keeping track of where it was connected. Now check that connection with a multimeter to ground and see if it has power all the time. If so, you need to find a connection on the switch that only has power when the key is at start and on.

Your not the only one to have learned that lesson. Of course, I've never made that mistake. Oops, maybe I told a little white lie.
