Almost looks like a 2 stroke Detroit.Those airbox covers on the side?

My neighbour has a HD9 same as that

15 allis chalmers tractors

9 lanz bulldog tractors

2 water cooled deutz

9 john deeres tractors

14 Aus made orange chamberlains

I spent most of my money on old tractors I wasted the rest

Friend had single axle GMC with 4-71 that he ran from here to Chicago 3 times a week . Pulling 44,000 loads , had RPM turned up some and know the HP on that was a lot more ,

Unsure of the high or low block design .I know when i rebuilt my 2-71 I used the T pistons and liners he had bought for the spare engine he was going to rebuild.

The HD9 should not have the low block engine, the HD10 did, but may be the very first production 9's came with the low block 4-71's. There is an HD9 on Youtube claiming to have a 3-71, I can't tell from the video, but if is a 3-71 that is something unusual. Heads will interchange between low and tall blocks, the older low block head is usually only 2 valve and the fuel rails are on the outside vs 4 valve and cast in rails in the later. It is easy to tell a low block from a tall block by looking above the blower, towards the fan, where the head and block part and see if there is a head gasket between them, if there is a gasket it's a low block, if the head is off and there is no machined channel around the deck and liners, it is a low block. The "N" is based on the 4 valve head and large port sleeves and cross head pistons. The HD9 is a great tractor, well balanced for farming, and for pushing, it could use power steering. With the tranny the way it is, you can back up faster than forward and if you put "N" 75 injectors and turn it up to 2100 you will be doing well over 100HP, turbo it and it will be close to 130HP or more, literally a screamer. That is the beauty of a Detroit, more fuel, air and RPM's means more HP. Tad

She has had a hell of life but even after running my 11EP, I still enjoy running the ol girl. Every thing on her is so worn, ya gotta have a sense of humour though. Mactractors HD11s

Photo was taken about five years ago Tad. The EP had a rebuild since, and has done a lot of work. The old B has done small jobs, but seems to like the idea of retirement. I have a series B 11 that needs some major rebuilding before going to work. Plenty of work to do on all my tractors. If I live long enough to get em all running, I`ll be doin well!

	The crawler is an AC HD9 which has a 4/71 GM engine producing 68 drawbar hp. When tested at Nebraska it pulled 95% of its weight. The HD9 was produced from 1950 to 1955.

	The 4-71 should put out a lot more HP that that 3-71 would be rated close to 70 HP and the HD5, 2-71 had 48 HP .. Thats the first thing I noticed was the air box covers on side of engine. Head work on those isnt that bad as all the parts interchange across the 71 series engines as do internals of pistons sleeves, bearings and such . valves are inexpensive and injectors are easily rebuilt.

	Drawbar HP in a crawler takes a dramatic dive from its engine HP Coke. If you replaced the low block Jimmy in HD9 with a 471N you can really boost that power up though

	The low blocks were the first 71 engines with no optional power ratings. The N series 71s gave all the optional ratings with different injector sizes and fuel timing settings. One guy told me N injectors wont go in the low blocks. Another told me they will. I would be happy for any knowledgable Jimmy mechanic to set me straight on that one

	Hi guys the hd9 and 10 both have 4.71gm motors the 9 79hp and the 10 98hp and the big air tube is the exhaust

	I think that is a 4-71. The regulator bracket is covering the number one air box cover also look at the muffler mounting it has five mounting studs; three reseced (sp) and one on each end for five studs. A stud on each end of each exhaust port makes four ports.
