Hello,
My 1941 C took first in the 2500 lb weight class in Kutztown PA. There were two entries me and my daughters boyfriend on the same tractor. If it moved an inch we were sure to win. It went about 137 feet for him and about 126 for me. I realized too late that I was riding in his loose tire tracks.
This is the second time we have pulled the tractor. I've been talking to other pullers at the show and they have higher hp modifications. What does that buy you? If my tractor can pull down the track in first gear at the agreed upon RPM and it holds it's RPM under full load until the tires spin, what would I get out of greater HP?
I feel that if I am pulling in a stock class then the important variables are hitch height, tire type, and weight distribution.

On another track like you just pulled on, with more HP, you may not improve your results. Now, move on down the road to a damp clay track with a bigger/heavier sled and you'll see why more HP is usually a good thing.

Yes on Damp Clay tracks I power out, you need HP for sure on those. Dry tracks I do much better against the modified tractors. Try beating a 153ci Farmall BN.....

Maybe try second gear. Less likely to spin out. Probably run out of power.

I pulled a B and a C for over ten years on all types of tracks. If your engine is up to snuff you will not need more HP in the 2500 pound class pulling in first gear. Balance to hold traction will be the challenge. I pulled my C in 3000 pound class and the B in the 2000 and 2500 pound classes. I could not get all of my C's power to any track until I jumped up to 12.4 24's with the original engine.
In my opinion I wouldn't worry about more money spent on power until you find yourself using up all the power you now have.

Great information. I'm with you. I was thinking I would pull where I can time permitting. If I stay at the same track then I don't think I'll be needing any more HP.
I'll check my tires, I think I have 12.4 24's.
I'm a little over on the weight but they let me go. I don't know if that's normal, I weighed in at 2570. I'm going to remove the cultivator lift and perhaps remove one of the front weights. Maybe even take off the hydraulic pump.
Also going to raise the hitch and put on a fixed hitch. They made me use a clevis which lowered my pull point.

Underware and false teeth and the crank. Those little old B hand crankers don't weigh very much. We start classes at 2500 and to get up there close to that with a handcrank B you have to weigh 200 soakin wet. Put water in the rear tires and bolt on a set of C wheels as rear wheel weights.

I was pulling this weekend and got a 3rd place in the 3750lb class out of 7 entries.
Took 5th place in the 4000 lb class out of 11 entries.

OK, with rear B weights (no fluid), front wheel weights, PTO pulley, 1 ram and everything else stock I come in at 2550 or so depending on the scale. I'm 200 lbs so that puts the tractor around 2300 lbs. I use the stock drawbar with ASAE hitch and clevis. It pulls better with the ASAE for some reason. No wheelie bars.

Interesting as that's Farmall H and Super C territory around here and they rule that class range.

No Fords here other than the odd 8n/9n in the 2500 class. I see a few 77's pull, they do OK. The hot Farmalls (stock blocks supposed to be used) run the track along with JD B's.
The pull club took a stance that the tractors must use stock blocks and look stock (No K&N filters). Plus the 3 MPH rule helps.

Phil,
Thanks. I really like it there at Kutztown. It's a great place for me to start. Everybody there is very helpfull. It's a shame it rained out.
If you remember my WC had to scratch. It could not pull a load. I think it's fuel related, I had water in the gas and maybe I did not get it all out. It would idle and rev but as soon as I put it under any load it sputtered out. I think it was running on the idle jet, then when it wanted the main it died. We had it scheduled for two pulls. Glad I could donate to the club even though I could not pull with the WC.

Here Is the B at the 2000 pound. The two paper plates was my order in both the 2000 and the 2500. I didn't find a good picture that showed a side view. Crank start without a power take off assembly.

these are the rules we are supposed to go by - All safety Rules will be enforced at all times on and off the track!
- “A” Class tractors must be 1959 or older; “B” Class tractors must be 1963 or older. No turbo chargers allowed.
- Classes offered: 2,500A; 2,500B
3,000A; 3,000B 3,500A; 3,500B 4,000A; 4,000B 4,500A; 4,500B 5,000A; 5,000B 6,000A; 6,000B 7,000A; 7,000B 8,000A; 8,000B 9,000A; 9,000B 10,000A; 10,000B - Drawbar height 20” maximum and 18” from center of axle. Tractors with 3 point hitches must have stays so hitch cannot raise over 20”. Hitch to have a 3” horizontal ring. Height checked at the highest portion of the ring.
- All tractors must have working governors.
- “A” Class maximum RPMS 10% over stock high idle. “B” Class maximum RPMS 3,000.
- Instead of random RPM checks, a “protest only” method by which members will protest, in writing, other members in their class and within 5 places of their finish. The protest must be made by the end of the following class and given to a track official or taken to the announcer’s stand.
- “A” Class 3.0 MPH; “B” Class 6.0 MPH
- Horn can blow 3 times. 1st and 2nd blows, puller must slow to turn horn off. 3rd blow puller is disqualified.
- Suitcase weights allowed. Should weights or any other parts fall to the ground during pull, puller will be disqualified. The rear weights shall not extend past the rear tires. The front weight bracket must not extend more than 24 inches in front of the furthermost portion of the grill or main frame of tractor.
- ALL DRIVERS MUST BE AT LEAST 16 YEARS OF AGE. Any driver under the age of 18 must have permission slip signed by parent or guardian and turned in at registration, and that person must be present at time of pull or driver will not be permitted to hook to the sled.
- During pull, if any tractor tires cross the white line, pull is counted and pull will be measured at that point.
- No shifting gears while sled is in motion. Ampli-torc hydra-power torque amplifiers will be allowed to shift in all classes.
- “A” Class tractors must have original engine. That is, stock block and stock head. “B” Class tractors must have original frame and manufacturer’s brand of engine fitting into the original bell housing without adapter plates and no more or less cylinders.
- Racing fuels allowed. No injected gases or nitrous.

Item #11 is what I don't think ("A" class) the BN with the 153ci motor should be allowed to pull

my wd beat all the olivers in the 4000 4500 and 5000 classes at 3mph. I impressed a bunch of old guys. i did this with a missing pontoon on my float and #2 was missing.
