I'm having charging problems on my series IV D17.

Should I see if I can get the generator fixed or put an alternator on?

If the answer is an alternator, which one and does the positive ground system make a difference as to the alternator?

If your wiring is up to par, the simplest thing to do would be repair the generator.  Many times a good cleaning and replacing the brushes and maybe a bearing and it's good as new.

From experience, the new regulators aren't the quality they used to be. My local generator repair shop worked with me and we've developed a transisor and diode setup and mounted it into the original regulator. This has really worked great so far, smoother regulator control and still looks original

Yes the ground does make a difference. If you don't want to switch to - ground you can get a + ground alternator.
