 Topic: Woods L59 help!!!

I have a Woods L59 mounted beneath my Allis B. I tried to change the blades, thinking it should be a 1/2 hour thing. I was wrong.
Each blade is held on by a bolt with a 15/16" head. Does anyone know if these are left or right hand thread? I tried both directions. Is it a simple matter of holding the old blade with one hand and cranking on the bolt head with the other? If so, it's going to take someone a whole lot stronger than me. My impact driver just chewed the bolt heads up.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Not only are they left hand threads you would do well to use a 6 point socket to remove them. A 12 point will take the points off the bolt head after being removed so many times. I just bought a 6 point last week. I am starting on my third set of bolts after I get the bolt with the rounded head out. That is after 12 years and I use the mower harder than most.
I mowed tonight with a 59 without the L which makes it a right hand that I put under a C.

They are left hand thread. and they get tighter as you use them. when you buy it new it comes with a spanner wrench that fits the pulley end of the spindle. A big chunk of wood between the blade and deck side works the best. Six point socket is a must. When you buy new blades from woods they come with new bolts.

I didn't get new bolts when I bought new blades from Woods! I got rooked!! I have put a bit of heat on the bolts to knock them loose as the previous owner never removed them. Just jacked it up and sharpened with an angle grinder. After that a bit of Never Seize on the threads along with the use of a n impact wrench cured the struggle and torn up hands and arms.

I would never change blades on any mower without using an impact wrench. I am old and spoiled.

I just changed the blades on my L306. Did it pretty much as Dakota Dave described PLUS I used vise-grips on the topside arbor on each blade. I keep my outfit at my farm that has no electricity, air compressor, etc. so it's just me being dumbstrong vs. the mower deck. It does help to have somebody up on top to hold the spanner wrench but even it doesn't help on the center arbor. FWIW

I just got a new set of blades for my L59 and there were no bolts in the (Woods) box.
Something new though. This set was powder coated rather than just painted. It made the grass look like it was cut with a dull blade on the two I was able to change. I guess I need to take them back off and knock the powder coat off of the cutting edge. I mowed an hour last evening with the C and the just plain Woods 59 and it did a fantastic job of cutting the grass clean. Those blades only had black paint on them. Something to think about when you put new blades on.
I really like the C better for turning but still don't like the fact that the left tire is outside of the mowere deck. I think I might make up another B with a C front end for that mower.

They are left handed IF you have an L59. I have a Woods 59 inch deck that looks exactly like all L59's but it has right handed threads in the bottom of the spindles. This mower was sold to an Allis owner but he could never get it to work to suit. There are right and left handed mowers out there. The blades and spindles are interchangeable.I now use left handed blades with right handed tapped spindles by tightening them with my impact so they don't spin off.
6 point impact socket is the only way to go with an impact wrench. The bolt heads tend to get the edges rounded over with time and can slip on a 12 point socket. It takes 3 times longer to sharpen the blades than to take em off and put em on.

Bolts don't come with new blades! I never remember them coming with bolts, as we sold woods for long time. And as others have said, 6 point socket and impact is a must! A good rap with heavy hammer on bolt head helps if using a block and breaker bar! But with impact they normally come off. And as Ctucker mentioned there are LH and RH L 59 mowers. But AC's should have LH ones.
