Primer / Paint Question

   I hope there is someone out there that knows more about this stuff then I do. When I purchased my "other orange tractor" it had already been sandblasted and primed with what looks to be John Deere buff primer. It seems to be almost a high build primer which seams to sand rather nice. But I had to do some minor body work on some of the sheet metal and need to cover it back up for final sanding but don't know what to use.

I had planed on painting it with a single stage urethane but got to wondering if it would be compatible, and if not is there any kind of high build primer that I can spray over the Deere buff primer that I could then cover up with urethane? Any thoughts appreciated.

	Tell a real paint guy that knows his stuff that you have Deere John primer of unknown cure and he is going to tell you to remove it, if he doesn't he is taking his best guess with YOUR money. How long has the primer been on the tractor? makes a big differance fully cured or not. I am of the school of Epoxy priming first and all other work goes over it, putty and surfacer included. Removal not being an option I would DA and spray a section with epoxy primer and wait at least a few days or a week and watch for troubles. if none appear I would DA everything including the cured Epoxy and prime it and hope for the best. Getting all your materials from top to bottom from the same place following the Mfgs "p" sheets is the only sure way to stay out of trouble, anyother way is tossing a coin.

	I agree with butch. Its not worth the time and expense to put a urethane top coat on w/out knowing for sure. I use a urethane primer which can be used as a surfacer or sealer. It's the Autobody Master brand. Don't know if you can get that brand in your area or not.

	I would imagine it is fully cured. it was done at least 6 months ago. I don't actually know if it is a JD primer but the color looks right. The only thing I know is that the guy that blasted it and primed it does it mainly on heavy construction equipment. A paint man looked at it and said it was some good stuff but figured it was for enamel paint. Boy I would hate to take it all off. I would rather downgrade to enamel paint then do that.

	almost any paint including urethane will work good ,very rarely does that type of paint cause the primer to have trouble,i would scuff it with a 3m red pad and paint,but even better to apply primer sealer first..i wouldn't even question if your gonna have trouble

	Thanks for the help guys. The paint man as well told me to scuff it up and apply some epoxy primer and see what happens. I am not in a hurry to get it painted but do need something to cover up the bare metal and filler on some of the dings I'm fixing. figured if it gets painted 4 months from now I'll be doing good. This should give me enough time to see if I'm in trouble.
