Hey guys I was just curious what were the differences between a Series I, II, III, IV D17. This might be a dumb question but our family has never owned any D series tractors. I have always thought they were a neat tractor and have always wanted to own one but it would be helpful to know what to look for. Thanks Blake

Series I,Series II,and Series III were basically same tractor with differences in paint (Persion I and II),Decals, front grilles, lettering and mufflers I believe. Series IV was much different, two way live hydraulics,3 point hitch was factory option, hydraulic controls on right side between fender and seat and oval muffler.Believe Ser IV had stouter drawbar on Snap coupler version than earlier models. Not sure on engine sizes,Ser IV may be larger,A little more HP anyway.Bigger heads?
Series I had metal seat and others were padded, not sure about Ser II
Later Ser IV had gone to 6 bolt front hubs

HP never changed through out the entire run. The main difference is the industry standard hydraulics on the series 4. There are some other mechanical differences, but they are pretty much minor.

D17 gas 226 except for the oiling system, was pretty much unchanged. The 262 diesel changed from a cannister to spin on oil filter, head mounted to block mounted water pump, a bypass valve was added to the oil line between pump and block, camshaft profile changed.

Oval muffler first appeared on series III, also the headlights were moved from the front of the tractor to the top of the fenders.

And early D17's had the same drum brakes as a WD/WD45. Later IV had a disc combination.

Don't believe too much that TD says, but they are right about the brakes, new brakes were efective at s/n 420001, which was the Series III break
