Gentlemen, I am working on restoring a G and I am down to the transmission case with clutch housing still attached and torque tube. Looks like I am leaking around the carriers, (brakes are all removed). Are the inner seals located inside the carriers? Also, can I remove carriers without messing up the differential gear inside? Seems like everything will fall if I remove the carriers. Thanks in advance............Jim

According to the drawing I have, the seals are inside the carrier and just inside the seal is the bearing that holds the differential. There may be shims behind the flange also. It looks like you have to pull the carrier and remove the outer race to get the seal out. I'll try to post a picture.

Hey thanks for the response. I went ahead and pulled one of the carriers off. The inner seal is there. But the differential gear drops to the bottom of the case when you remove the carrier. Any problem with this? Thanks, this is my first total restoration and I want to do it right. Thanks again................Jim

The only problem I could see would be getting it back together.I guess you could use and axle shaft to help assemble it. Is the bottom of the case clean and free of sludge?

Not to clean, looks like a nice coat of light brown goop. I will flush everything out before I reassemble. Just did not want to do that to early as I didn't want anything to rust before I got the oil back in.
