D17 industrial backhoe

I also was wondering how often I need to change the tranny fluid?

Yes it does on the left side. The tractor was yellow , it has solid front axle and ts1000 loader.

The shop manual says to change "Power Director" fluid every 6 months of use,even on shuttle clutch. Does not say how often to change actual transmission lube,24 quarts,that will set you back.Guess it only needs changed as needed...?

Does it still have the rear subframe on it? Have any pictures of it? I have a wd45 that we are mounting a backhoe on...

No there is no sub frame on it. there is nothing on the back not sure what was there it's just a plate over the back. I wonder if you can put a 3pt hitch on it or not. There are no hydraulic controlls other than the loader and shuttle clutch, so maybe it never had one.

I would consider changing the fluid if you have not done so since buying the unit.

I recently noted that I was a little high on one of my D15II units and decided to pull a bit back out as I had obviously overfilled it.

Using a fill/recovery unit that I picked up years ago for filling the rear differential on a pickup I had (unit from Garriotts garage), I ran the tube in enough to access the fluid and pulled out a few cups. It was very light colored (almost clear) and the reason I likely did not see it properly on the stick when topping it off. I pushed the rubber tube down till it bottomed out and was quite surprised at what i recovered that low in the housing.

Absolutely nasty looking stuff and I will now drop all fluids completely before running this unit again. Like most, I noted small leaks since buying this 1964 unit 3-4 years ago and simply added a bit of fluid to what appeared to be pretty clean stuff.

Since the old gal pretty much just runs a brush cutter 200 hours/year, I never really thought much about it, but I will monitor same in future as this old gal runs very well and I would like her to stay that way.

I just copied that picture off the forum, it was quite a while back and I can't remember who posted it. It's not in a book I have. I haven't done much with mine except take it apart. The shuttle clutch looks to be good. The block was no good, it was all split open on the bottom webs between cylinders and the center split through to the main bearing. I have another block that looks good, but I have not devoted much time to it.

Darrel in nd our fuel has 10% ethanol in it and I heard they want to up it to 15%. I know people who have blown engines as a result , most have been 2 cycle motors . Not sure if older motors that never had it in the 60's will be damaged now. Thanks for input

	Does any one have any info on the backhoe on a 1963 d17 industrial? I have one that I asume had a hoe on it. It does have the ts1000 loader on it . Last year you folks helped talk me through fixing the power steering , which works great now cleared alot of snow this winter. Thanks

	For some reason there is no info on any of these industrial ac's. I have had to get service manuals for the farm version of the D17 they are similar but also very different. Just wana make sure I take care of it right.

	Thanks, I guess if the fluid looks clean and full I'll leave it alone. I've only changed motor oil and bucket fluid. Should I do anything about the ethynol in the fuel now a days or just keep it fresh, I'v heard some horror stories about new fuel in old engines.

	I have one of these too! Mine does not have the hoe on it either, I guess I don't care to have it on there, I think some were bought without the hoe.

	CMPMAN, What's the story on ethanol, is that the only gas you can get? My theory on ethanol would be "If you go through a tankful a week, you could probably run ethanol, otherwise not". Also, if it has never had ethanol in it, and you start running it, expect some gas related components to plug up. Darrel
