Today I went out to start the CA. Hasn't been started in months. Battery dead. Put jumper cables on backwards (forgot negative ground). A little smoke came fron generator. Quickly removed cables. Then reversed them. Tractor started right up.
Now when I take the cables off the CA battery the engine dies. What is happening? Why does the engine die? Did I cook the generator in that few seconds? Is the generator not putting out any voltage? Just don't know. If the test require the use of volt/ohm meters, I do not have one and don't know how to use them anyway. Don't have too much electrical knowledge. Maybe I just need to take generator to shop. Any suggestions before I take it off? |

First, check the condition of your battery. Since your ignition system depends on the battery, if it is low or dead, the tractor will die. Charge it up or temporarily put another battery in its place. Start there first. If the battery has a full charge, it should stay running.
If it dies on a fully-charged battery, then start looking elsewhere.

My guess is you let the magic smoke out of the generator. Probably toasted the regulator or cutout, whichever is installed. Probably if you fully charge the battery it will continue to run after disconnecting the jumpers, at least untill it runs the battery down again. Sorry to say, magic smoke is needed for it to operate and charge correctly. |
