Cut out vs regulator

   I have a 54 CA still 6v and it just went thru another cut out on the generator (yearly thing).Was wondering if a 6v regulator would be a better route to take?? I dont see any need to covert this little tractor to 12v yet. TIA Rob

	Is the ones your using china brand stuff? Definitely leave it 6V. Regs work good but if light swith is OK then no need to sw. I sw one yrs ago because light sw was missing parts. If I have all the parts then really no need.

	Yes its hard to find a good cut out around here,Lol. My light switch is good,but I would set a regulator up on a toggle switch.

	All generator voltage regulators include a cutout. A good voltage regulator will treat your battery much better and drastically increase its life by not overcharging it. The generator run with only a cutout has a rudimentary built in current regulator that's sometimes modified by the light switch, but the quality of regulation demands adding water to the battery nearly every week because it overcharges so much. The modern cutout is a silicon diode. It makes the generator a bit more efficient at battery charging by preventing the 10 amps reverse current a cutout often allows when the engine is running just below a charging speed. I think Steve at B&B sells decent cutouts that should be able to survive more than a year in 6 volt service, including diode cutouts. Gerald J.

	As Gerald mentioned, a VR would be a nice upgrade to the old 6V system, and definately be nicer to the Battery. I do offer an electronic cut-out that is designed in the original Delco Cutout chassis, (need a core for exchange) as well as a heavier aftermarket unit. If you do go to a VR, you can retain your 3 position switch, just disconnect the Field circuit from the H/L switch to the Gennie and use just the fuse tower side of the switch for your Headlights/Tail if so equipped. I also have Gennie mount 6V VR's in stock to take the place of the cutout. They run around $48. bucks. For a couple extra bucks, I offer the wiring which comes with new brass hardware for the VR to Gennie hookups. If you buy a VR locally, hookup for the VR to Gennie would be "G" or "Gen" terminal on VR to "A" (Armature) post on Gennie, "F" (Field) on VR to "F" post on Gennie, and the circuit that ran to your cutout to the "B" or BAT terminal of the VR from the NEG side of the Ammeter.
