Changing a D17 diesel to gas with a gleaner E engine, Just wondering what are some of the things I need to look for form someone that has done it. Thanks

Well the diesel hoods and frame are longer, so your fan will be farther from the radiator, not sure if it will affect cooling or not, but there will plenty of room up front with only a 4 cylinder in there.

I bought a 262 diesel from a D-17 that the guy converted to gas using a 262 gas combine engine. I think that would be a lot simpler conversion.

You will also need frame rails and sheet metal from a gas tractor. This will shorten up the tractor and bring the fan to its proper distance from the rad.

Torque tube shaft will have to be changed. If I remember correct there was some one a few days back wanting to go thr other way. You two should get togather for some parts trade. MACK

I did the E engine in the diesel chassis. I didn't change the shaft or the hoods and used the diesel radiator. I did this to a tractor sentenced to work for the rest of its life. It was to rough to ever be a show machine but to good to part out. I had to make a hole in the hood for the muffler to come through and used a fan extender from a Ford car. If I had it to do over I would have went with a 262. I already had the 226 engine, so I used it.

Nathan. Thanks for the reply that was what I was interested in, I have two 226 engines so I thought I may be able to use one and just want a good economical chore tractor that starts good in cold weather still not decided rebuild the diesel and trade it off or find the frame and hood parts and use a 226 or part it out but but don't like that idea because it is a good tractor. Thanks

I put a 262Turbo in a D17 gas and the input shaft was to long. I had to shorten the tip and splines about 3/8 of an inch. The one somebody changed diesel to gas without doing anything,it was probly barely in the pilot hole 1/8 to 3/16 of an inch. Should be ok because if it wasn't in the hole you would know from vibration because of being off center. Also changed frame rails,hoods,radiator,throttle linkage from a D19,made a return line from pump, front motor mount because it was out of combine.

I used a deeper pilot bearing and flipped the clutch plate around so the splines were the other way.
