Use modern day universal hyd fluid.......less leaks and it just works better because it's thicker viscosity.

For our Fords, which take hydraulic fluid for the powersteering, we have always used ATF just so it is easy to distinguish if it starts leaking, because the sump is so small and that pump burns up so easily... I see red drops on the ground where one of them sat the night before, I know I need to go chase it down and get it to the shop. So yes, it is fine to use in Power Steering pumps, just costs a bit more, but comes in small bottles too (another plus).

Follow the Dr's orders, but it does say in the original D17 service manual to ask the owner what he has been using. It could have hydraulic fluid, Dexron ATF, or SAE 10 motor oil.

We ended up with everything rebuilt in ours when chasing down the oil foaming problem, which by the way was the pump shaft seal. And when everything is up to snuff 10W or AW32 works great and cold steering effort is much less and responce is quicker than with universal tractor fluid. But as the Dr said when things are worn the tractor fluid helps out with the assist when it's important, warm oil.
