i don't think there's really any guarantees, at 4000 hours you should have around 2000 hours of running before it needs an engine.  Other than the usual checking the wear on the draw bar, eyes on the lift arms and wear on the break peddles, i would look at the over all appearance and check for leaks.  you can tell a lot about how people took care of their equipment by the way it looks.  if it's beat up and dented than it seems they didnt care too much and probably didn't care about maintenance either.  if it's realy clean and neat and obviously not all repainted then they probably took good care of the maintenance.  good luck

can't give you a lot of hints wekracer hasn't already given you but make sure to take it through all the gears if you can and hook it up to a hydrolic implement, sure can save a guy thousands of dollars just by doing those 2 things

my only thing on them is the damn fiberglass hood is always beat up or cracked. And if the cab is faded, its normal they faded on  the dealer lots before most of them ever got sold

If the font axle seals are leaking it could be a sign of bad bearings & shafts, check tie rod ends for play.
