I phoned my local AGCO dealer yesterday on the off chance that they might have a set of replacement brake bands for my '47 'B'. Surprisingly the parts guy was very helpful and found a set in Regina, but the price was $299.80!!!

I told him I could get them from Tony in Oregon for $52.  He said: "If I was you, I would order them from him. You will save a lot of money and you will probably get them sooner."

Obviously they aren't going to sell many parts at those kinds of prices!!!

Yeah, I called my local Agco dealer about a few parts some time ago and couldn't believe the prices!  My guys didn't seem all that interested in helping me out when I was calling about parts for an older tractor ('52 B).

I think John Deere has better prices on Allis Chalmers parts than AGCO does. AGCO is the last place I look for Allis Chalmers parts. Only go their out of desperation. I can usually have parts custom made cheaper than AGCO.

OTOH, I have had pretty decent luck getting parts for a reasonable price at my AGCO dealer. Anything that is a higher volume piece seems to come in about where I was expecting. There are some oddball things that seem to be overpriced though I would expect those B brake bands to be a little closer to $100 per set. I got the throttle linkage thingy for my D17 IV for about $12. a very similar piece for my IH1066 was $36. Go figure.

I called Agco looking for one of the small square windows on the back of my 7060 and the parts guy said the window was $24 so I told him to order it thinking that wasnt a bad price at all. I needed the seal too and he priced me that at $60, I couldnt believe it. I now have $84 in that window.

AGCO is cheaper on somethings, but it depends. We always check everywhere and different AGCO dealers have different prices. They got me on a floor mat for a 8070, $250 when I could of got the same aftermarket mat for a $150, but I thought it would be OEM but it aint.

Daehler is exactly right, they are cheaper on some things.  As far as the brakes for the B there are many decent aftermarket ones out there.  Another item you have to look out for is QUALITY.  I know Deere is gaining alot of ground with their "Parts Country" parts which are relabeled A&I parts but I have one thing to say about A&I, BEWARE!!!!  I have noticed a decline in parts quality and am afraid to sell many of their parts anymore.  I have talked to several other partsman recently that have said the same thing.  I have been pushing aftermarket parts from Herschel, Tisco and Hy Capacity.

Several examples of A&I problems I have seen lately-power director end plates, the ones offered by A&I are not hardened and we had to replace them recently on a D17 due to the fact that the rollers had chewed them up and the tractor wouldnt even move anymore.  When it comes to splitting the tractor and replacing the defective part the OEM plates look alot cheaper with a price of $125 more apiece.  Also brake lining kits for later D17s,170s, 175s, 180s and 185s.  If memory serves me correctly the aftermarket ones are $35 a set and the OEMs are $275 a set.  This looks like alot but when the aftermarket linings crack and you have to pull the axle off again and quite possibly have to replace drum parts damaged from the metal on metal contact the OEM metal back linings look pretty good.  The are also a better material and do not glaze like the aftermarket pads.

95% of the time you are money ahead with OEM parts.  Take it from someone who has sold parts for over 11 years AND uses the parts on his own machinery.

Jim IA, has a good handle on the parts. The problem with AGCO and the AGCO Heritage line of parts is that 90% of the OEM parts are NOT OEM parts. David

I've gotten some heritage parts from AGCO, in the past, that were very good quality and not too bad on price, (mostly belts, filters and bearings).  I've also bought the same made in China sickle section from AGCO for 2-3 times more than I could have gotten it from TSC which is high too IMO.  Got made in USA ones from Farm Fleet for less than the Chineese ones from AGCO.  So, it depends like others have said.  Right now, being ticked at AGCO dropping orange, I'll buy from someone else if I can and get the same quality.

Two thoughts 1) I Buy mostly parts from Agco to help keep as many orange parts available as possible for me in the future.  2) One of our 6080's has a A&I clutch in it that I had put it in the guy that put it in has worked on AC's since his dad started selling them in the 70's.  I have readjusted it twice he has adjusted once and split it once to look things over once.  It will be fine for a while then not release getting harder and harder to shift.  He has another 6080 with an A&I clutch coming in that has  the same problems with very few hours on it.

Hey  you guys does the other parts places help you out when there is a question about some thing . Do they have any warranty on their product ??. Do they take care of you if there is a problem ?? Is price everything ? I have been working parts for thirty years and take pride in helping out the customer making sure they get value and support . AGCO may have some pricing issues but what company does not.

I would think you should be grateful that you can still buy parts for a tractor built in 47.
That is 64 years later?!
I doubt other manufacturers can do that.

Reede I think most of the comments on here, in this post and others, have to do with calling the AGCO and them not caring or bothering to look up parts or help out.  Guys like you, who have worked for 30 years, or Jim, (11), or the guys at the dealer I go to who know what your looking for and help out where they can are getting harder to find and are worth some extra money IMO.

Personally though, even though parts are high margin, I can see AGCO dropping more and more of them.

parts for old tractors are not a money maker (dont sell enough VOLUME)for Agco, but if I go there and get a part i need for my D17 maybe i will buy parts for something else when i am at the dealership, just a suggestion.  Also aftermarket warehouses/catalog/internet carry them, so if they can make money selling old tractor parts........?  There I go thinking out loud again!

1959 D 17 gas , 1964 190 gas, 1965 190xt gas AC 4bottom slat plow, 6 row 30in #72 planter Im not getting bigger my cloths are just getting smaller.

As far as AGCO offering old parts for tractors they offer them with what the demand says.  For example if I order a part that they have one left on hand and that is the first one they have sold in ten years they are going to discontinue it, it is plain common sense.
There is a set amount of years that a manufacturer has to offer parts, once that time is up they do not have to stock parts for that item anymore.  Were dang lucky that Deutz did not drop all older parts when they took over.  Actually Im surprised those idiots didnt. lol  We have to face the facts that we are lucky to get alot of the parts.  Go to a Ford dealership and ask for transmission parts for a 1948 F-1!  Not going to happen.

Victoryallis, we installed a clutch in a 6080 from A&I, never again.  The throwout bearing was built half as well as an OEM and it went out in a few months time.  I would imagine that is where your problem is.

I would add as for quality of aftermarket parts Steiner seems to be doing very well.  Compare a Steiner and A&I manifolds for a WD, it is an amazing difference.  But there are a few parts that Steiner carries that AGCO can beat on price.  Like Ive said before shop around.

The hertiage line is pretty much dead.  Yes some Heritage parts are relabeled aftermarket but more and more are just relabeled OEM parts.

I know Im sounding grumpy but this same discussion keeps popping up and I want to help you guys but at the same time try to explain alot of this.  So like I said before, shop around but remember in the long run you get what you paid for, be for service, quality or both.

Thanks
Jim
