wd shifter problem

just bought a wd tractor got stuck in gear, now it is in reverse, but my shifter is not free the 1st and 2nd rod will not move in or out and the reverse rod the ball bearing keeps popping out of the hole any suggestions

Welcome to the form.  Where abouts in NY are ya ?  I would pull the rubber boot off and remove the snap-ring and all and remove the shift lever. Then you should need is a long screw driver and be able to center your gears into place if that dont work your going to have to pull the shift tower.

  The ball on the bottom of the gear shift leaver wears and causes a problem like this. I build it up with weld and grind it to shape.

It's supposed to have a detent ball on the shift rail to hold it.If you don't feel it,it's probably been apart and got left out.Gotta take the whole top off to get to it.

Shifter top, the cover under the battery is for access to the hand clutch pack.

Jeremy,
  If your hand clutch is not staying engaged take the cover off of the hand clutch  under the battery box and take out enough shims to give the clutch enough snap to hold it in and so the hand clutch doesn't slip. There is a certain number of pounds pull to get it over center when you pull back on the hand clutch lever(about 15lbs or more), but I can't remember how much it is. To tell which clutch is sliping, if the wheels and pto stop it is the foot clutch. If the wheels stop and the pto keeps turning it is the hand clutch.
 
If it is the gear shift leaver not staying in gear then the detent spring is broken or the spring and ball is missing for that shifting fork. To repair it you have to take the cover off of the transmission which is under the gear shift leaver. The shifting forks will be there on top where the ball of the gear shift lever fits into them.

 I have thought about doing this. What is the correct size to build it up to? Or do you just grind it down untill it fits?

When I build up mine I just guess at the size without making it too large. I try to build up the aera that has worn off. Someone on the old board posted the dimensions of the ball but I can't find it, maybe someone else can find it.

The Ball on the end of the shifter should be 1/2 inch diameter and flat on both sides 3/8 inch wide. The hand clutch should be shimmed to 35 thousands of an inch when released. I can't find the drawings I had when I did mine.

it is the hand clutch i am talking about the shifter stays in just fine the hand clutch lever just doesnt stay back

i adjust the hand clutch to where there is a positive snap when it is pushed forward.keep adjusting the shims till this happens...

We always used the method that Dakota Dave suggested. Follow the manual and it will work fine.
