tractor coming home when/if the snow ever goes away.lol The old gent that owns this 185 said it will be mine when the snow melts and I can back up to the shed and load it. I have not looked up the serial yet so I am not sure of the year. It hasn't farmed since 1985 when their barn burned, but it does run a few hours a year on bush hog and on a generator when the power goes out. It has not quite turned 1000 hours. Everything works; I would call it cherry condition. By the way what would you pay for it? Thanks, Dana

New tires, lots of oil leaks, antifreeze stain. Picture sure makes it look like a lot more than 1000 hrs. Still nice shape regardless. I wouldn't price by the tach on this one.

I like it Captain. Maybe it can be a birthday present for you. Are you gonna need to build a new shed pretty soon? That looks like something I could use for bush-hogging and plowing snow. It would be nice to operate a platform tractor instead of getting my legs tangled up in the 45. Charlie

Well y'all really got me thinkin bout this tractor. I see all the dirt and grease and am wondering if it indeed has more hours than stated. These guys milked a lot of cows back before their barn fire and they have a big hilly farm. They sold all their AC crawlers, 8050, and several 7000 series way back but kept a few for bush hogging and running the generator if the power goes out. I saw this tractor run a couple years ago and tack and all else worked. It sure seemed like it was kosher with the tack time but as you see the stains and grease have me wondering. I believe the tires are all original. Oh well we shall see. Thanks, Dana

Check the drawbar for wear (hole and where it slides on the bail), as well as wear on the clutch and brake pedals. There shouldn't be any wear with only 1000 hours...heck for a working farm tractor that is about 2 or 3 years of use. FWIW, I don't think they had that tread pattern back when that tractor was built.
This tractor that I gave $5000 for showed 24xx hours and showed absolutely no drawbar, 3pt or pedal wear. I think it might have run a grain auger most of it's life. I'm still kicking myself for selling it.....

It could be the original hours on it. I have seen other tractors with low hours that looked to be in this condition. Like Eldon said check for the wear. Either way you are going to love it! I'm wondering how we lived without a 185 before I bought ours. The power was out last monday night and the 185 was put on the generator and ran through the night. After adding some fuel to it I figured the fuel consumption to be around 1.3 gallons an hour. Mine has over 5000 hours on it but did have a good home and still does!

Those couldn't be the original tires because they didn't have that type of tread when that tractor came out as stated earlier.

Ditto on the tires, My uncle had a IH 756 1973 or so bought new it had 2000 to 2500 hrs i cant remember exactly ,when he sold it in 1996 I knew the history, always stored inside, and well taken care of , but it had several minor leaks, as this one does, paint looked about the same too, His 756 did have original tires on it though, this 185 has just been used. I think it is a really nice looking tractor that hasnt been beat, and on a dealer lot would be priced high.

There sure are some nice 185's out there yet and this post shows that. I am also looking for a 185. I think they would be nice for hauling wood. I see it does have some leaks most that age do. Over all I think it is in nice shape yet. If it was me I would bid on it. As for the price I dont know seem like there all over the board. A couple of posts ago a guy said he seen a 175 with a bag engine and tranny and it sold for 2100 I believe. That to me is crazy! Eric

I'd say this might be a fairly early 185 (1970-73?) judging by the muscle car racing stripe along side the hood. My Grandfather and Uncle had a 185. For many years it was the "big" tractor on the farm. It did all the chopping and plowing and most of the baling .All they had was this a D17 and D15 for the longest time. The 185 is a real hard worker, I don't think you'll be disappointed. Though, they were known to be prone to the dreaded Allis Disease as well. Did you take it down a steep hill in 3rd High and slam on the brakes and see if pops out of gear?
How much I'd pay for it and what it's worth are two different things! I'd say if you got it for $5,500 or less , you did very well, $6,500 or less, you still did good. A dealer would ask $8,000 - 8500 easy.

Looks like an excellent tractor. Any tractor that sits most of it's life then runs for hours on a generator is going to develop leaks. Even if it does have higher hours then the tach shows, its a good one. Dana, you are making up for lost time, two tractors in two weeks!
What are you going to get next week? LOL

Check the front pivot bushing on it. Looks like right side of wishbone has a repair. Most will be repaired on left side about 3-4 inches from rear. Check lift arm swivels. Looks like more than a thousand hours honestly. Brakes will need attention probably, if never replaced. Pedal wear is a decent judge of hours sometimes. HTH Tracy Martin

I have that same style of three pt blade. It has gotten a lot of use and abuse. I noticed that stripe just under the top link. Did you add a little heat?

JimIA - I like the step setup on your 185.
I always thought coming down off a 185 was a great chance to bust a guys chin on the original 3/8 thick flat steel off the bottom of the battery case.

Check the drawbar hitch hole. Pin wear good indicator of hours. My 185 has almost 5000 hours. Just got 8030 from Sumerix completely gone thru and painted. 8030 hour meter says 3172. Draw bar if original on the 8030 only slighly egged. My 185 egged pretty good. Bill

Love my 185 -- great tractor. That one looks like it's in pretty good shape, but always hard to tell from pictures. If you get to drive it and check everything -- if all checks out ok, I'd say around $5500 to $6000. If you get it for less -- drive home real quick and put it in your barn before the sheriff shows up - LOL.

I was able to find a good one at an estate sale from the 2nd owner, 1st owner passed also but left service record in the owners manual which came with it, 1600 hrs. It has 1800 hrs on it now, I replaced the rear tires as the orignals were seeping and I caught well within time and no damage became of it. Original paint, always sheded. I have been caught in the rain 3 times, sat out 4 nights and rained on overnight one time when it was stuck last spring.

Captain Dana - Lets see a 190xt III, a 185, .... a 180, 175, 170 .. and then there is the 200, 210, & 220. Throw in the 160 and you have all of the 100 series. Just kidding!
Your 185 find looks like a nice tractor. From its photos, it has a good amount of hydraulic oil leaking or fuel leaking around base of fuel tank. You may also want to check the fuel tank, sediment bulb shut-off for any fuel leaks?

Dana,
I believe you have found another jewel. I see a tractor that was probably taken care of, but has never had a bath, or been polished in its life. I see it has been doused with fuel every time the tank was filled. The fuel cap may have some issues, as well as the fuel return line connection at the tank. The fuel level sending unit has a gasket, that could be leaking also. These things, along with the other things that have been said, I see a tractor that is worth, and would bring $6000+. It is a powerful tractor, that is nimble and well suited to almost any job on the farm. I believe most of us are jealous that we didn't find it first.

That blade I believe is an A-C blade. The top part of the hitch was a bit bent up, need a little blue wrench adjusting. Just need to paint it!
The steps are off of a full vision cab that was on a 190. Works great and makes it alot easier to get on and off.

My opinion, if it matters, is that if the 185 will do what you want, and it appears to be in good condition (and it does-I have a lot of stuff that leaks) make your best offer on it and don't put too much emphasis on the hourmeter for pricing. I would hate to see you miss out on a nice 185 because we thought the tach was wrong. My best guess would be somewhere in the 5 to 6000 range. I think you would get a lot of machine for the money.
