B water pump

   I have a B with a leaking water pump. I have an extra water pump in a pile of parts I bought. Is there any way to tell if it's any good without installing it. Is there a way to rebuild these? And last question, is there a gasket involved?

	A. No. You can tell if it's bad, if the shaft wobbles, but you can't tell if it's good until you put pressure on it. B. Yes. Kits are available. ...BUT, by time you buy a kit, and get it all back together, and it leaks because you scratched something, or did not get it set exactly right, you will wish you just bought a rebuilt one. C. Yes, there is a gasket between the pump and block, and yes, it will leak if you don't put it in.......

	Ed, I clamped mine in a vise on an angle so when I filled it with water the water was above the shaft. Left it there a couple of days and checked the amount of water still in it and around the shaft for a leak,,, was slightly wet so I ordered another, wasn't willing to go through putting it on and finding a big leak. 	Glenn, not wishing to step on your toes but one could subject the pump to a pressure test with a few hoses, clamps and adapters made with rubber bungs. Pressure from a bicycle pump to 18 or 20 psi would probably be enough. I think some Bs even had zero pressure systems. I'm not saying that passing a simple cobbled up pressure test would guarantee the pump would work fine in operation with belt tension on the pulley and rotation at engine speed but if it did leak under the pressure test it you'd know not to put it on the engine. I'd use the pump you have in the pile of parts as an exchange core for a rebuilt. The kits I've found were to pricey to be worth the bother.
