40 All Crop was AC's smallest pull type combine.  Had a 40 inch cut with a 45 inch gather.  Yes they tend to a be harder to find.  They are out there but the production number was no where near the number of the 60 series combines and they were only produced from 1938 or 1939 to 1941.

?????? pricey?

These things usually sell in the thousands column, not the hundreds....
If I had a bigger trailer, I'd have bought it already.

keep your eyes open, the one at the Muncy sale a little over a year ago went for $550. It was not in as good of shape as that one though. I have seen them as high as $5000, and as low as $50. There is a world of difference between a $50 and a $5000 machine, though, and parts service was discontinued in 1962.....

The machine on craigslist in Ohio is coming to Michigan.  I went and looked at it last saturday and bought it.  You don't find many 40,s field ready like this one, thought at the price it was a bargin.  Just depends how bad you want one, this one makes my second 40, as I also have a bagger model

I saw one in Wyoming sell on E bay a couple years ago for more then that and a tree had fallen on the back of it.  I believe the buyer was on the old UA site, don't remember his name. He lived somewhere in the midwest so had a long drive to come get it.
Harold, will you be using the 40?  Be neat to see it run some grain through it.

Here is a picture of my 40 out in the field.  Didn't get a chance to post a picture this morning.  Can't get the link for the Ohio Craigslist to work but it sounds like Harold got a good buy. Congratulations!

I need to go get my parts machine......

I went to an auction about 3-4 yrs ago that had a 40 without an axle and other parts . thought I'd buy it for the reel meckanism, because mine only has a pickup on it.scrap was alot less then ,but it brought $285.last I saw it the guy was trying to figure how to drag it onto a trailer.

Rusted out 40's for parts are fairly common, as they built about 15,000 of them.  Unfortunately, they are very fragile and do not put up with harsh treatment or outdoor storage. Within 10 years of being new, they were already considered to be way too small and most of those 15,000 machines were parked outside to rot.  Unlike Gleaner combines, the LaPorte built A-C machines didn't have galvanized sheet metal, so they would rust out within 2-3 years of being kept outside.  In short, Harold, Ya done good!
