Is there any way to improve traction with a D-14. Recently we had snow and I was attempting to plow out the drive. The Allis had trouble just pulling itself up a sight incline and when I dropped the blade, it would just set and spin one wheel. I had a WD before I bought the D-14 and it pulled like a champ.

Weight on the drive wheels (weights, loaded tires) and chains are critical for 2WD tractors in snow.

Fluid in the tires makes a great difference. Some people won't use Calcium Chloride because it will rust the rims. It will only rust rims if it gets on them from a leak and isn't washed off. Most tractors with rusted rims have had fluid in them for 40 or more years.

I am sure that is part of the problem as there is no fluid in the tires. The original owner had the wheels rust out around the valve stems and replaced the wheels with the wheels off an Allis combine and never put fluid back in them. I was just surprised that the D-14 didn't get better traction as the WD I had didn't have fluid in the tires either and traction was never a problem with it. Other than that, the D-14 is a major improvement over the WD as the D-14 has power steering. I was going to put power steering on the WD but the only power steering units I could find were selling for as much as I originally paid for the tractor. I guess I am luck we don't get much snow here in southern Missouri. Will be using the D-14 for brush hogging soon (smile). Thanks for the input.

You can have Rim Guard put in your tires, a calicum substitute.  It is actually beet juice and has a similiar weight to gallon ratio.
