We have an Alice Chamber Tractor that has gone nuts AGAIN. it acts like it is running out of fuel. My husband takes the return line off of the injector pump that goes to the fuel tank. After he puts air pressure in the check value the tractor will run again for a minute or two. Please let me know if you have any ideas what we can do to fix or make it run.

Sounds like a case of the flex ring in the pump is deteriorating and plugging the return fitting with the glass ball in it. An injection pump rebuild is in the near future if this is the case. I had this happen on my 180 diesel tractor, and I now have sent the pump off to have it rebuilt.

Ive heard that you can loosen the screws on the timing window to let fuel leak out relieving pressure in pump.If that makes it keep running,you definately have a governor ring going to pieces and time for rebuild.

It depends on the pump, the tractor model, and the rebuilder. Here is an example, we just rebuilt the pump on our D21, it had a couple of worn parts, so price is s little higher, but it ran over $700.00 Not cheap to rebuild a pump.

If it runs after you blow air back thru the check valve the governor ring is going bad, for a temporary fix you can remove the return fitting from the top of the pump and break out the glass bead and remove the spring behind it. That should let it run , not the proper fix but will get you by awhile.

But when the governor ring is all gone so is governor control and the engine may overspeed, and in that process make throw a rod or two through the side of the block. That tends to be terminal.

I agree with the prognosis of a contaminated check valve. The governor band deteriorates over time & comes apart in tiny rubber pieces which lodge in the check valve spring. When housing pressure builds to match the transfer pump pressure (8 or 10 psi) no fuel moves. The guys are right about a temporary fix but if the source is not fixed the pins of the 2 piee governor hub will hammer in their slots & metal will start to come off. AVERAGE repair in our shop runs about $525 and covers all the expected wear items but unexpected items (such as a cam ring or governor assembly) can raise that amount substantially. You can likely find a local shop to do this or you could send it to us. Bill
