    Posted: 12 Feb 2011 at 6:15pm
I just finished a project that consisted of splitting an 8070 to replace the rear main seal, and while I was in there I replaced the torque limiter "clutch" and also the ring and bevel washer.  The transmission is now slipping badly, and I need to know what went wrong.

I heard about breaking in the torque limiter by attempting to stall the tractor with the brakes to slightly burn the clutch to get it to hold correctly, maybe having to do this several times.  I first did this in 3rd gear, low range, and the transmission held to the point of killing thet tractor (had I let it go that far.)

I then let it cool down and went to move the tractor, intending to do it again if necessary, and reverse hardly has any torque at all, and 4-5-6 forward gears are also slipping badly.

Please don't tell me I have to split this tractor again to find what went wrong.  It went back together really well, and I am relatively confident that I got the parts in the right position.  I could not find a torque value in the service manual for the lock nuts that go outside the flywheel cover, which are the only ones that are responsible for holding down the torque limiter, I think, but I did tighten them as tightly as I could get them with a normal half inch drive ratchet.

When I first started the tractor in the shop I did put it in gear and hold the brakes briefly just to see if it would hold.  Could I have burnt up the new torque limiter with that and the first stall test?

What are the possible problems?  Thanks!

If the stall test is done correctly the engine will pull down and die. My guess is that you installed the bevel wave spring backwards and it is not applying enough force to the pressure plate, letting it slip, been there done that. If you resurfaced the flywheel then different circumstances could come into play. HTH, Mike

So, while it's slipping in 4 or 5 or 6th stand hard on the brakes and see if the power steering is dead also.....if the steering is gone, the limiter is (for some reason) slipping.
