What should I look for when buying a set of 14.9 X 28 tire chains? i.e.: number of cross links, gauge of chain, cleats on cross links, etc. I'm assuming I'll have to buy new ones this time of year. P.S. -- Recommendations on brands to purchase or avoid would be appreciated. (prices seem to vary dramatically.)Edited by Osage_Orange - 04 Feb 2011 at 10:54pm |

Why is there never time to do it right the first time, but always time to go back and fix it?

and......reflect quality. Tractor chains need to have the cross bars that form an X of some sort.Single cross bars tend to get lost between the lugs. It's one of those "you get what you pay for" things. |

Depends on what you are using them for? Street or Field. What kind of soil you have? Is the ground frozen, or muck? Look online for the answers to what kind. There you will find dealers too, but I would go with TCS if you have one near. They can help too.

I paid quite a lot for my 18.4x28 Duo Grip, I pulled my receipt and it was over $300 but they don't draw into the crossbars and do the job I need; I have had mine for three years now and bought them from tirechain.com.

They will be used off-road in snow. Had not thought about the crosslinks pulling down between the tire bars. Thanks for the comments.

I have a couple sets around here somewhere burried under snow.
The ones for my IH 460 with the 16.9 X 24 tires are ring chain cross links, the rings are all double on each link as well as the chain that runs between 2 cross chains to keep them above lugs. As the rings are free to turn there is little wear on one part of chain as they are constantly shifting position. Have hadthem for over 30 years and little repair or wear shows on them.
