Ok, so I picked a a 39 AC WC with wide front and a loader for a cup of coffee (literally). Anyways it supposedly ran years ago but didn't at the time. Now I am not looking to dump a ton of money into this as I have too many other projects going on right now. I just want to get it running good so I can move it around.
The good.
Tractor is 95% complete
Sheet metal and gas tank are near perfect.
The wide front IS a factory one not a jury rigged one off another tractor.
The bad
The loader is from a old ford.
The cap and rotor button need replaced and are EXPENSIVE. 83.70 for the cap and 18.90 for the rotor.
Water pump is shot.
All 4 tires are wasted
I had it running after I rebuilt the carb then the water pump went. It still needs a lot of little things like hoses, wiring, belt, etc My questions are:
How rare are these tractors with wide front ends?
Can you rebuild the water pumps or do you have to buy a new one?
And how do you properly install the mag cap, I pulled the big cap off to clean the breaker contacts and am unsure if I re-installed the cap correctly. I know that on the rotor shaft gear its mark "C" for clockwise rotation and "A" for counter clockwise rotation. The mag rotates clockwise so I tried to line up the C with the beveled tooth on the pinion gear but am not sure if I lined it up right. The engine sounds like it may be out of time. I don't know too much about these old mags so any advice is apprectiated.

LOL I almost took the front end off for scrap at first. I had never heard of a wc with a wide front and when I frist looked it up online it said the wc only came from the factory with a narrow front. Then I did a little more research and found they didn't come from the factory with a wide front but a wide front was offfered as a dealer installed option. I don't know if thats true or not but I'm hoping someone on this forum will point me in the right direction to find some info on it.

Let us see some pictures. There is a big difference between a WC wide front end and a WD wide front that will bolt on a WC.

I will try to put up some pics tomorrow or sat. Its definatly a wc wide front. The only weird thing is that I haven't been able to find any pics of a styled wc with a wide front. |

I would look around for used tires if you want it working without a lot of expense. Buy a new water pump, people that have had experience rebuilding them have said it will save you time and grief and maybe money to buy new. If you look around, you might find a working mag at a swap meet or such for less money than the new parts but it might not work long.

If that's the wide front you've got, it's almost as rare as a 33 WC. I really need to start hanging out with some of you deal finders.

I'd advise you to put your tractor on EBAY and take the $$$ and go get a nice upgrade that you will like.
You might consider parting it out, you'd be amazed what you will get.
A WC isn't much of a loader tractor anyway.

Where did you get prices on a cap and rotor for this WC? those prices are rediculos.
the vendors on this site are much more reasonable with there prices. A cap and rotor should not be more than $30. I have seen those wide front's sell at auctions anywhere from $1000 for a bent one to up to $2600 for a nice one. My opinion would to not use that style wide front with a loader. |

Norm Swinford's book shows a Styled WC with WFE on page 49. He says that 1947 and 1948 production records offered an adjustable WFE. I could scan the picture, but you should really get the book. Vendors on this page sell them, but you can still get them from Norm, and if you ask him he will autograph it. Got mine at TSC and the only autograph involved was mine on the check. I use mine every day and it is starting to look like it. Maybe I should get another before he discovers how much more it is worth with his signature on it.

What ever you do hang on to that tractor it is rare and nice to have. The people who are telling you to get rid of it are wanting to see you sell it so they can get it. Hang on to it!!!!!!

I got the price for the cap and rotor from my local dealer. The cheapest I have found on the internet was $55 for the cap at tractorparts.com. I will put the mag model number on here as soon as I get a chance to go look at it. I'm not getting rid of the tractor nor parting it out. I will eventually get to fixing it up nice but right now I have a old case garden tractor I am re-doing and a 83 dodge p/u I am repainting. I just want to get the ac running and get the loader off. My sparkle wrench will take care of the loader this weekend and I will put up some good pics after. Edited by chllngr528 - 04 Feb 2011 at 4:29pm |

Good for you! You have something special and it sounds like you will take care of it.
Contrary to Don's post above, when I read your original email, you didn't sound happy with the tractor and implied you didn't want to dump any money into it for repairs, tires, etc. I read into it that you wanted a good loader tractor and wound up with this.

On the contrary I never intended to use it as a loader tractor. I also didn't mean for my post to sound as if though i didn't want the tractor. I just don't have the extra money to dump into this project rite now. I didn't exaclty plan on getting it, it was just one of those deals I couldn't pass up.
My mag is a FMJ 4B3. Does anyone know where I can get a cap for less then $55?

I have the same problem, more time them money and not much of either. as far as the mag timeing you should try to get a service manual. it will step you through it. you need to time the points with the rotor and the time the engine with the mag. My dad can do it in the dark but i have to work a little harder at it. i can't give you any more tips then you already got.
Good luck i would love see it at a show some day.

I already have a I&T shop manual. Its probably the most worthless manual I own. I literally have over 100 different shop manuals ranging from garden tractors to semi's and this I&T shop manual is by far the worst.

I have an OEM service manual for WD part #79003405 and it has a decent section for the FM mags, the pictures aren't much but the description is decent.

I seem to be having some technical issues uploading photos. The ones I did manage to post came out kind of distorted. Maybe a mod can help me out.

Hey, you got the makins for a caravan buddy seat there in place of the left fender. That loader looks like it sticks out a long way from the front.

She runs like a champ. I really can't believe how good it runs. Maybe this week I will get around to getting rid of the loader. And yes the loader does stick out way far. I'm am also 100% sure its a ford loader.
Its actually not cobbed up to bad believe it or not. just the loader and fenders. the rest is still intact. Probably because the loader protected it.
