The most critical part of repair would be getting the clearance between the vanes and the housing set right. Probably .002 or less I don't know. If the swirls are removed from the "cylinder" you would have to grind the top plate to make the depth of the cylinder the same as the height of the vanes, then add a .002 gasket for clearance.

The top plate is to be flat and the clearance is set by using multiple gaskets. They come in different thicknesses. If you tolerance isn't correct you will lose prime in your pump. Bob

I didn't make myself very clear. If you grind out the grooves in the bottom of the cylinder, then you will have to grind off the top of the "cylinder" to keep the depth of the cylinder the same as the length of the vanes. Yes the top plate should be flat.

thanks guys, but how do you check the clearance between the cover & vane with the cover on? do you use a straight edge over the surface & measure clearance, before you put the cover on?

Would the plasti-gauge stuff work that you get from the parts store for measuring bearing clearances?

Measure the depth of the "cylinder' with a depth mic and mic the width of the vanes. they should be the same. Your gasket sets the clearance.
Another way would be to put a straight edge over the "cylinder" with the internals in it. The vanes should be flush with the top of the "cylinder".
