Alright...190XT flying out of 4th gear. there is no play in the tranny. It is solid. The gear looks good. So I look in the service manual said starting at serial # 30570 there were changes in the shift coupling, counter shaft gear, and the 3rd & 4th gear shifting rod. My 190XT is Serial # 28699. Now... will it work if I just tried getting the longer shifting rod or is that a no no? Will that interfere if the other parts are not updated as well? Let me know.

On a constant mesh tranny, looking at the gear teeth will tell you nothing, I don't know if that is what you meant by "looking at the gear". The spline on the "top" of the gear is engaged with the sliding collar, that is what "pops" out. I don't think there is any way to inspect the sliding collar without removing from the shaft. I'm not familiar with the 190 tranny so you can take this with a grain of salt. If the new shifter rod makes the sliding collar engage farther it might help?????? Charlie

Austin are the notches on your gears where the coupler slides over in good shape?

The seem to be alright...they look the same as all the others, but fourth is the only gear that jumps out. I want to get this updated rod so it will engauge further, but will not updating the other parts make the longer rod not work?

![]() Here is a picture of the notches on my One-Ninety's old gears. The bottom gear is third gear which would jump out, the top gear is second which was always fine even with a full load of grain behind it going down hill. I think the wear on both gears is fairly similar with the third being a little more. I think the only true fix for a gear jumper is a complete tear down and check over each part, espicially if you don't know the history of the tractor because you never know what the guy before was capable of. With a complete tear down, good or bad, you know what you got, otherwise it's just a guessing game and the so called fixes aren't really fixes they are just band aids covering the real problem deep down inside.

A 190 has to be a pain in the ass to tear down... |

Oldoug, that is a Great picture. A tooth rounder is cut on both sides of the spline for ease of shifting and the top gear looks even on both sides. Probably not much wear at all. Your 3rd gear on the other hand has excessive wear on one side of the spline. I goes almost to the bottom of the "tooth". If you look at the other side and both sides of the top gear you can see a considerable flat behind the tooth rounder. Charlie

I might add, if there is that much wear on the gear spline, the inside of the sliding collar is probably just as bad, leaving no flat contact area to do the work. Imagine the same tooth rounder on the collar and add the wear. There is nothing left but radius against radius and any amount of pressure will push the collar off.

Shift the trans into fourth gear with the shift cover in place and the dowel bolts located where they belong (LF corner and RR corner). With the gearshift lever in 4th gear detent, see if you can force it even deeper into fourth gear....if you can, you need to get the latest & greatest 3rd/4th shift rail from a late model 185 tractor and install it and try it before you tear it all down. You might be pleasantly surprised.

It does seem as tho you can give it a little extra and it moves further back.

I "moved" the detents in 3rd on my 45 by welding/grinding the rail.Used to be able to push the lever another 1/2 in or so deeper in 3rd before this.Didn't have problems, just preventative maintainence.Don't know how the 190 is made in the rails so I don't know if this could be done to it.
Got to thinking and remembered moving the 3rd gear detent on my 220 also so I imagine the 190 would be able to do the same. Edited by Steve M C/IL - 29 Jan 2011 at 12:17am |

Didn't someone say before that a sloppy input bearing will help them pop out also?
