I just went to drain the oil on a customers d12 and it just dripped out so I pushed my finger up through and felt a flat round plate up in there. It is a about 3 to 4 inchs from what I can feel .I was just wondering what the oil pump looks like on the early d12s .I thought that maybe it was  a trans.magnet at first but it does not feel magnetized .I can t think of what it could be other than a oil pump base

The strainer is round, about 3-4" in diameter. About what you are describing.
They slide on the pick-up tube and are held on with a cotter pin. They are designed to float. solid on top with a brass screen on the bottom. Bob
