My 7000 with a Delco starter is starting to act like the Solenoid is sticking/not making good contact. It will sometimes click, sometimes it will work, and sometimes it just does nothing. Usually a couple good hits with a big screw driver handle fixes it, but my Dad called me today and said it was really getting temperamental. I have had to take it off and tighten the nut on the copper strap that crosses from the solenoid to the starter, but last time, I couldn't really get it too tight, as the stud began to turn a little and I didn't want to mess it up. I remember reading that there is a gear reduction starter that can replace the Delco and Lucas starters on these tractors that was much more reliable and spun the engine over faster. Does anyone have any details like price, where to buy one, and a part number? I may do that if it's not a simple fix on the current Delco.

Sure it isn't your safety switch on the clutch. Take a heavy wire and jump it to make sure that isn't your problem before you mess with the starter. Mine has acked up at times. I assume the 7000 has one like the other 7000 series.

The late 8010's used the reduction starter. Look up the AGCO part number and go from there if that's what you want.

Is the reduction starter preferred over the Delco? I was thinking it was a Denso unit or that there was a Denso replacement for the 301 that was supposed to be top of the line? Maybe I am thinking of something else.

Thanks for the tip. I may have to see about getting one of those from the local... Cat/Challenger dealer. Sure miss the old Allis dealers that we used to have around here.

Dose sound like your solenoid but something I had trouble with was the PTO safety switch that is located behind the batteries, its just like the clutch switch.

Slade, I'm going to first try the solenoid and see if that fixes it. If it's not the solenoid, I'll get in touch with you about a new starter.

I found out the hard way as usual , make sure you have big battery power to it , or it,ll burn it up ; thats what the starter fix-it shop said !!! |

It has 2 group 31s on it that are a year old, so battery power shouldn't be a problem. Talked to my Dad this morning and he said it fired right up today, so I'm guessing the contacts in the solenoid are about gone?
