Little fun at the shop yesterday afternoon. Though I've replaced this trailer with an RGN unit, I've already purchased suspension hangers so will incorporate them with the improving weather. Last time I rolled this trailer over the weather turned sour on me by the time I could really get time to dedicate to the project.

I've always liked this trailer since building it in 1983 from two wrecked semi trailers' parts so may elect to keep it after all.

Something to do I suppose.

Shop property was the homestead for all the surrounding farm ground. I don't own any of the surrounding ground, only 2.2 acres the shop and house are located upon.

Snow finally melted off over the weekend so plenty muddy in spots.

Saw several Robins in the tree out back this morning so spring is coming!!

Got after the project pretty good this nice, warm day. Axels are ready to pick out tomorrow morning and I'll remove the rest of the suspension hangers after they are clear. Was only going to replace front hangers but discovered center hanger on one side perforated behind air tank so will replace both sides. Have the parts already so just a bit more time to complete the task.

First front hanger gouged off the frame:

After removing the bases of the front spring mounts:

Everything removed except axles themselves. I'll bridle and pick them out with the skid steer tomorrow morning. Then continue on with the task.

Are you gonna put parking brakes on it. Nice to have it stay still when hitching.

Yes I am. Pushing back is not a problem with a couple of my tractors but my R model winch truck has a high mount 5th wheel and I have to either block the tires, or connect the air lines and pull the trolley valve down while backing under. You can't see in the photos but all four chambers have holes rusted through them. This trailer hasn't been off my property since about 2012 so setting quite a spell. I have new 30/30 spring brake chambers, good used air tank, and a new R-14 relay valve already so going to incorporate all while it's upside down. Brakes, hardware, slacks, wheel end seals are new and never used since install. Same with the king pin and plate which is 3/8". Brake hoses will be replaced citing age and jacket cracking.

I saved back for many years a "Power Packer" hydro pneumatic landing gear setup I may use on this trailer also. The two speed setup installed now was new in the early 1970's and I repurposed it onto this trailer when built. I never really cranked it off a truck loaded so these have mostly been lightly used and never bent. Axles are repurposed from a 1950's moving van that was rotted to pieces.

I'll get it gutted out over the next couple of days and blast clean before welding. I may use the same welder I built the thing with all those years ago as it's still in the shop sitting disused.

I'm probably going to widen it to 102" width also. Right at 95" wide now and not going to split and section axles as don't want to do any frame work.

Nice little project I've put off for a long time. I'd like to get this going strong before the weather turns consistently nice as I really don't have a lot of time to work on my own stuff then.

Pouring through both Euclid, and Dayton Parts catalogs and have most of the needed bolts and hardware listed. Have to do this as not quite certain the kids at the counter could find these old parts although still in common usage.

Need to order the rebound bolts, sleeves, nuts and equalizer hardware as didn't plan to originally go this far with refurbishment and will have them the first of next week.

I've been planning to do this task for a number of years but grandkids started coming along and an already short allowance of free time was further reduced. Now they've far surpassed any knowledge I possess, so a little free time returns.

When I took my road test for my Class 1 Chauffeur's license (now CDL-A) back in the 70's, we had to back up, hook the air hoses and hold the trolley brake when "hitting the pin". Failing to do that was an automatic failure.

I had forgot about that until I read your post! Memories...

I wish you were closer, I have NEW spring perches for the 4 corners of a Hutch 4 spring suspension. Although they might each fit into FlatRateBox. I got them New to repair a trailer I have and them found a good price on a complete NOS air ride.
If it was fun to pull in LOW gear, I could have a John Deere.

In Illinois it was a class "D" license for heavy combination vehicles then. Class "A" was for any single vehicle under 16K in weight except motorcycles. It is reversed with the CDL program which I was grandfathered into. I was in the line for the heavy license on my b'day 1978, but there was only a light pretrip and equipment  checkover. Then of course the driving test. Nothing about the trailer except make certain your pin was latched by pulling with the trolley valve, and working lamps. I was in a then new and borrowed 352 Peterbilt and old 40' Fruehauf flat that did not have spring brakes. The trailer had chocks. Didn't know if they were required so set them into place before the test and the examiner watched me secure them into an underbody tool box as we were doing the pretrip. I don't remember setting them back into place at conclusion but it's been a while.

Being a firm believer in the power of "Slave Labor", I enlisted the help of my 14y.o. grand daughter to pick the axles clear and stage them while I drink coffee and watch:

Will be a bit easier to work with now.

Not many 14 year old's can do that! I frequently conscript my 15 year old Grandson for similar tasks.

In New York State, we had to completely unhook and re-hook. The day I took my road test it was sunny when I left home, but we had a cloudburst when I started my test. I thought the guy might not make mee unhook, but I was wrong. By the time I got back in the tractor, I was as wet as I would have been by jumping in a pool. Maybe he felt bad for me, but I passed.

Your "slave labor" will fondly remember these times the rest of her life. I bet Grandpa enjoys them, too. Grandkids are the greatest, but they grow up way too fast. My youngest granddaughter graduates from high school this year. It isn't like it was when they were younger.
