Little fun at the shop yesterday afternoon. Though I've replaced this trailer with an RGN unit, I've already purchased suspension hangers so will incorporate them with the improving weather. Last time I rolled this trailer over the weather turned sour on me by the time I could really get time to dedicate to the project.

I've always liked this trailer since building it in 1983 from two wrecked semi trailers' parts so may elect to keep it after all.

Something to do I suppose.

Shop property was the homestead for all the surrounding farm ground. I don't own any of the surrounding ground, only 2.2 acres the shop and house are located upon.

Snow finally melted off over the weekend so plenty muddy in spots.

Saw several Robins in the tree out back this morning so spring is coming!!

Got after the project pretty good this nice, warm day. Axels are ready to pick out tomorrow morning and I'll remove the rest of the suspension hangers after they are clear. Was only going to replace front hangers but discovered center hanger on one side perforated behind air tank so will replace both sides. Have the parts already so just a bit more time to complete the task.

First front hanger gouged off the frame:

After removing the bases of the front spring mounts:

Everything removed except axles themselves. I'll bridle and pick them out with the skid steer tomorrow morning. Then continue on with the task.

Are you gonna put parking brakes on it. Nice to have it stay still when hitching.

Yes I am. Pushing back is not a problem with a couple of my tractors but my R model winch truck has a high mount 5th wheel and I have to either block the tires, or connect the air lines and pull the trolley valve down while backing under. You can't see in the photos but all four chambers have holes rusted through them. This trailer hasn't been off my property since about 2012 so setting quite a spell. I have new 30/30 spring brake chambers, good used air tank, and a new R-14 relay valve already so going to incorporate all while it's upside down. Brakes, hardware, slacks, wheel end seals are new and never used since install. Same with the king pin and plate which is 3/8". Brake hoses will be replaced citing age and jacket cracking.

I saved back for many years a "Power Packer" hydro pneumatic landing gear setup I may use on this trailer also. The two speed setup installed now was new in the early 1970's and I repurposed it onto this trailer when built. I never really cranked it off a truck loaded so these have mostly been lightly used and never bent. Axles are repurposed from a 1950's moving van that was rotted to pieces.

I'll get it gutted out over the next couple of days and blast clean before welding. I may use the same welder I built the thing with all those years ago as it's still in the shop sitting disused.

I'm probably going to widen it to 102" width also. Right at 95" wide now and not going to split and section axles as don't want to do any frame work.

Nice little project I've put off for a long time. I'd like to get this going strong before the weather turns consistently nice as I really don't have a lot of time to work on my own stuff then.
