Tomorrow will be the 50th,anniversary of the great freighter sinking in Lake Superior,, any opinions/ thoughts on this massive loss??

I remember the storm the night the Fitz sank. I'm in Southern Michigan and we had snow and ice. The wind howled out of the north. I can only imagine how bad it was on Lake Superior!

Have loved since introduced. A haunting story that gives me chills every time I hear it. My imagination runs as though were there but of course cannot fully understand the reality. Remarkable that a cause has not been determined even after finding her. I'm sure it's a combination of things but have tendency to believe she was heavier than designed for that day

Even though I was only 9, I remember it announced on the radio. We had toured the Soo Locks the summer before. I got a little toy souvenir ship from the gift shop of a freighter and lo and behold it was the Edmund Fitzgerald. I went to University in Sault Ste. Marie and of course everything around there was shipping related. I got into the story of that wreck more and more. I’ve experienced a lot of weather like what took the Fitz down that night while up there. All I can think, the last hour or so of their life had to be quite a ride. Imagine the size of those ships being tossed around like a bobber. Even then those guys had been in storms before and probably didn’t think they were going to go down until the last second. 30 foot waves at a faster frequency than seen on oceans. Quite a ride for sure.

I had never heard of the Edmund Fitzgerald until the Gordon Lightfoot's song came out; I first remember hearing it when I was stationed at NAS Memphis in late 1976, the song was played regularly on the radio stations that we listened to at the time.
The most plausible analysis I have seen is that the bow went under a large wave which caused the bow to strike bottom while the props in the stern were still driving forward, thus breaking her in half amidship. The lake really is shallow enough at that location, and the broken wreckage tends to support this theory.
I dunno 
Today is also the Marine Corps Birthday! Semper Fidelis!

That is the theory I believe, add to that is some of her deck lids were leaking making her lose buoyancy going deeper under the waves.
