What type of lubes are used in the transmission and final drives on the 170?  Operator manual says use a special lube from the dealer.  I put a premium 821 equivalent hyd oil in the hydraulics and in the transmission for now.  I'd like to drain the final drives, but not sure what to put back in.

Transmission and hydraulics is 821 or 821XL or any modern day trans/hydraulic fluid. You could use the same oil in your final drives if you want to. I still stick with 80/90 wt gear oil in the final drives trying to have less chance of axle seal leaks on 50 year old axle seals.

Thanks, that was the direction I was leaning -- gear lube for final drives.  The tractor had a stuck brake which is why the owner sold it.  The brake popped loose when I loaded it but I'm guessing we'll have to work on the brakes at some point.  I removed a lot of debris from the brake chambers, lubed up the brake pivot linkages and everything seems to function like it should.  A couple small items to do and I can give it a test drive.
