I have G# 7602. It's been stored in a shed with the battery removed. Unfortunately I don't remember how the battery was installed before. I bought a new 6 volt battery & installed it with the positive terminal toward the starter. I hooked up the positive terminal. When I attempted to hook up the negative terminal I got a lot of sparking. I reversed the battery & I'm getting less sparking but it still seems like too much to me. What am I doing wrong?

6 Volt: + ground PERIOD, plain and simple. I've never known anything 6 volt to be -ground.
If it was fun to pull in LOW gear, I could have a John Deere.

Sparking should not happen no matter which way the battery is hooked up.  Check your wiring.  You are grounding out somewhere.

The systems can be easily changed from positive ground to negative ground by changing the two small wires on the coil, switching the wires on the back of the ammeter and "flashing" the generator.

If the wire going from the coil to the distributer is on the positive (+) side of the coil, it is positive ground. If the wire going from the coil to the distributer is on the negative side, it is negative ground.

I agree that only way you are getting sparks is if you have something in the system grounding out.
