My 1952 CA has a TSX486 Type A/Fixed Jet carburetor.  I put a new kit in it, but the kit doesn't come with a new venturi which is just a bit eaten around the edges.  I've not been able to get it to stop missing randomly (at high RPM it misses slightly less).  Initially, it ran best with the idle screw adjusted all the way in.  I took everything apart and ensured clear jets.  I found the idle screw damaged very slightly from over-tightening and smoothed it out with some sandpaper (thought it was new and I'm sure I never over-tightened it, but then I haven't found the original if it was new with the saved parts).  This resulted in very slightly better performance and allowed me to back the screw out just a bit, but not much overall difference in behavior.

I suspect a venturi leak may be causing it to slurp some extra liquid fuel in every now and then.  I'll consider sending it out in the future for a full rebuild, but in the mean time I wanted to investigate if there are any "upgrade" (e.g. performance, reliability) options.

I see these 2 Zeniths at DJs but I don't see enough information to differentiate the reason for a significant price disparity (I've enquired via email).  I assume the second one is the same one that Steiners has as a "universal" replacement.

One says ZENITH and the other says ZENITH STYLE..... Could be a China Knockoff..

I know you can buy Chineese knockoff of the MS carb "style" for under $50.
Like them all, but love the "B"s.

I found a source for a machined venturi replacement.  I may try that first.

I find sources also that indicate TSX670 on a CA (with TSX670 also interchangeable with TSX701, TSX815 and TSX844 but not enough info to prove it).

Uncle Tony's Garage channel on YouTube the other day had an episode on stumbling/missing points style engines. Your problem seems like what he said was an old school problem: chasing fuel, plugs, points, condenser... When the real problem is a worn distributor shaft. Fix was to tighten the points gap to compensate, or replace the distributor shaft and bushings.

Very possible, it has been in the back of my mind.  But I do know the carb has issues.  It's running a bit too rich.  It starts really good though.  Barely has to turn over at all and fires right up.  My brother said it fires before it even rotates :)

I bought a harbor freight mini ultra sonic cleaner ($80) and put several carbs through it. Really helps. Dawn dish soap and green/purple cleaner and hot water. Better than a rebuild kit.

Split the carb and put split side down. A little basket from an office desk set for small bits. All fits.
