Well if it is running on a 6volt mag check the kill button on the side of the mag.Mine shorted once and had to take the wire loose from kill button and run it outside the mag.Just a thought....could be a number of things such as timing or fuel supply.Just start the elmination process and narrow it down....good luck.

The way I check for "fire" is,take cap, rotor and points cover plate off.Stick rotor back on shaft and twist advance to open and close points. You may have to turn engine with hand crank to get at the spot where you can "break" points by twisting.Pull coil wire out of cap and hold close to block (1/4-1/2 in).Turn on ignition and twist distributor shaft and if all is well you will get a nice hot spark jumping to block.(don't hold the wire too close to the end or you'll get bit).If you ain't getting spark here your problem is no power to coil or bad points/condensor(or too close point gap). Anyway, this is how to tell if you got "fire" at least from the coil. I suppose there could be rotor, cap or plug wire issues downstream.

With a distributor you have to have some juce in the battery or it will not fire.
Charge the battery and find out why it went dead.

It won't excite the field in an altenator with the batt dead either. You MUST CHARGE the battery externally then try to test for ignition and go from there.

get a good battery in there and see if that helps your coil need juice to make it fire so if your batterys dead it wont fire

Bring that dead battery inside a warm building and let it thaw before you try to charge it. Dead batteries will freeze. Attempting to charge a frozen battery can cause the plates inside to touch and arc. Charging batteries produce extremely explosive hydrogen gas. A spark in the wrong place can make the battery explode.
All gas engines need proper air/fuel ratio, enough compression, and a properly timed spark to run. If any one is missing it won't run. Got to find out what is missing to fix only what's broke...

Does the battery negative side go to ground? Most alternators are set up for negative ground. If someone did the alternator swap from the original generator set up, it might not be wired up right. Get a good charged up battery in it and disconnect the charging system until you get it running and can check it out.

Did you ever get it running?
If so what did you have to do? (Battery charge, and repair the charging system?)

if your battery won't take a charge, it's done for...you need spark and that has to come from a good battery!

well im going to get a new bat in it. i charged it inside but the battery wouldnt stay charged even when we had the truck jumping it. it was sparking but it wouldnt turn over enough to fire. there is something that is killing the bat what could that be? it has done that to 2 bats and its not the altinator.

If you get a good battery and you see a spark when you hook it up, something is wrong in your wiring. How do you know it's not the alternator? What was sparking? If you have sparks when you try to turn it over you have a bad connection. Depending on how the wiring was changed from original you should only have 4 things with any kind of connection to the battery. One is the charging system, second is the lights and third is the coil, fourth would be the starter. Something has to be wrong in one of these to make it drain the battery.
You can very easily disconnect everything but the starter by removing the cable from the starter switch that goes back to the electrical box. Then remove the hot wire to the coil that goes through your switch and run a wire from the battery to the coil(make it so you can pull it off one one end or the other). Now you shouldbe able to start the tractor. The only way to figure out what is wrong is to separate the different systems from the battery and check each one out individually. I had a discharge problem on my CA a few years ago and couldn't figure it out. Sometimes it could sit for a month and start right up. Next time it might go dead in 2 or 3 days. I found the starter switch cardboard insulation was bad and the contact connected to the battery could ground out to the inside of the switch. Talk about a fire hazard!! |

I would do like CTucker said, unhook everything.
Then hook up the cable to the starter and make a jumper to the coil, see if it will start.
If it starts then looks for the battery problem, broken wires bad switch, light sockets and I would not rule out the alternator or voltage regulator.
