An older man that I’ve known for years bumped in to me at the lumber yard recently. He told me he wanted me to come out to his house next time I was in his area.
This week I’m working right down the road from him. I went by to visit after work yesterday. He said he wanted to give me a 22. I looked at and told him I could pay him something for it. He said absolutely not. He said he hasn’t shot it in over 30 years. I thanked him and offered him a hand at any chores he could use help with. He had me take some stuff from his shed and load it in his truck. Didn’t take ten minutes. I brought it home and gave it a quick cleaning and shot ten rounds through it. Cycled nicely. I really like it. |

That is a sweet shooting 22. One of my older cousins gave Dad one in the late fifties or early sixties and I inherited it when Dad passed away and I hope to pass it on to a family member who will take care of it.

I am sure he knew it was going to a good home. I always wonder what will become of mine. My nephew has autism, niece wants nothing to do with them . Glad you could end up with it . Enjoy

Remington made good rifles and shotguns in the years your 22 was made. Unfortunately they've fell on hard times. Enjoy the gift and see if family members can enjoy shooting it too!

Pat, I was pondering on the same thing after I read Thad’s post. My granddaughter (only grandchild) likes guns but has other interests also, so I wonder if she will treasure what has been handed down to me. One is my grandfather’s 44spl which I definitely want to stay in the family. I presently have two guns that belonged to the father of a close friend who asked me to store them for safekeeping probably forty years ago. He passed away several years ago and I have reminded his daughter twice that I have them and she can get them at any time. So far they are still stored away.

I have a 550 with a scope that has uninvited a couple of groundhogs from eating the garden.

Was my first rifle purchase. It too ate ammo like candy. My fault, itchy trigger finger &
impatience. Probably a dumb move but I traded it for a Remmington pump 22 which I still have. Probably should have kept it.

Bought a 550-1 back around 1990, great craftsmanship runs flawlessly. All of the 500 series were great 22 rifles. Can't beat those guns made in that era. Love to find an unmolested Remington 31 in 16 ga. Thanks, Tracy

Sounds like a classic case of gummed-up internals, especially with older .22 rifles. If you haven’t already, stripping it down and giving it a thorough cleaning could do wonders. Sometimes, a worn-out part can be the culprit too. If you need replacements, Every Gun Part might have what you're looking for. I've used them before, and they’ve come through with some hard-to-find pieces for older firearms.

Remington 550-1 = I have one standing behind the door right now that I have had since before I was born over 3-score years ago. That thing will drive nails no matter whether you take care of it or not. I have never had it fail to fire -- and, back when I was finally old enough to buy my own shells, I flat put them through her, box after box after box. You can mix up a magazine full of shells, several different brands, Shorts, Longs, and Long Rifles, throw in a few Rat Shot --- does anyone remember genuine Rat Shot shells ? --- mix them all up, filthy and covered with pocket lint and tobacco gum, put them in the magazine, and I guarantee every last shell will cycle through and fire, as fast as you can pull the trigger; and, if you stand on your hind legs and do your part, every round will hit it's mark. I am not a fan of anything automatic; I am a lever-action and revolver man myself; but, that old Remington will stand and deliver and gets my respect.
