Here’s a 27 minute video link about how the Miller Farms Custom, LLC dry their wet (14-21% moisture) hay bales. I had no idea anything like these hay dryers even existed. Very interesting! And dryers are powered by Perkins 9L diesels.

I watched this video and those Chinook dryers look to be quite capable of drying lots of hay! I heard the knock on some dryers are they take too long and only handle small batches. I saw a used 2021 Chinook for sale in Canada for $200k on tractorhouse. Another guy had a 2019 for sale on HayTalk but not sure he sold it. I am guessing these new would be $400k+ including installation costs. Miller farms own two! He did the cost justification and that all seemed plausible but then he said the initial investment may take a lifetime to pay down. That is quite the setup. Those needles coming down into the hay and blowing hot air is ingenious. I can't see making enough money at haymaking where I am to ever do that. You have to have a bale baron, telehandler, big barn and make 100,000+ bales a year to make the loan payment, I am guessing. I still like the idea even if it doesn't work for me.

My Dad always hung a few pairs of old wringer washer rolls on the front of our baler.
It didn't help dry the hay a bit, but it sure made for good conversation. Wich I could find those photos. Edited by Macon Rounds - 28 Jan 2025 at 7:18pm |
