8050 power director started acting up. We were grinding feed the other day, and the tractor was getting bogged down while grinding. We finished, and when we went to move the tractor, it kept switching to high on the PD. It would then switch back to low, and bog down, then go to high, and then back to low, until we shut it off.
Started it back up today, and it keeps switching back and forth between low and high. In my mind, I feel like this is an electrical problem, and the solenoid is jumping back and forth? Do you think that I am on the right track? Or is it some other problem, like hydraulic? Any tests that I could do to troubleshoot? Thank you John

Wish I was there to witness what's going on. The transmission oil is FULL, right ?? Stab the dipstick more than once and look at BOTH sides of the dipstick to verify the oil level. Swing out the battery tray. Locate the high range solenoid on the Power Director valve which is pointed down. Disconnect the wires going to the solenoid's coil. This will insure it cannot shift to high range via the Power Director valve shifting mechanism.

Hope it is the solenoid. I think many years ago we had failure of the center sealing ring on the clutch snout and it would bleed over and pressurize high range. It takes less pressure to engage high - as high engaged with low still on it bogged, then low kicked out but still was trying to engage. It did not shift up and down though. Doc might comment on the mechanical aspect..
