Would like to know where to get head gasket with copper ring around holes instead of steel. Had one for Allis WD I did some years ago. Put one with steel in and leaked antifreeze out side when putting antifreeze in radiator. Used copper gasket sealer on gasket. Head and block were both resurfaced. Steel does not crush like copper. Don't know why they went to steel.

I think a Fel-Pro head gasket has a compression fire ring to seal the compression and the rest of the gasket is composition. However, I always smear something around each water hole and all the way around the O.D. of the gasket on both sides to see to it I've never once had a water leak. Copper coat on those metal gaskets just seems a waste of time to me. By the way, they didn't "go to" the laminated metal gaskets in recent times. They've been that way from the 1930's or 40's. Try a NAPA store.

The gasket Abeleine Machine shows online is what I'm looking for. Talked to salesman. Said it was what they had. Sent set from Reliance. Same as all the others have.

i think you will find when ordering parts that they all have the same stuff from the same supplyer most of the guys that answer the phone dont know the differance unless you work with places that specialize in certain brands and then they are limited to what they can do

Dan, I had this gasket customed made a few years back after I found out Victor Reinz #3162 gasket was discontinued. Victor Reinz made them for Allis Chalmers. I attached a picture of what the new gasket looks like. Design was copied from an original Allis Chalmers metal gasket with copper water ports and asbestos fiber core. The vendor did not used asbestos in the new gasket. If you interested in purchasing one, I would need $98.00 for gasket plus shipping. I can get a shipping quote once I have your address.
I have used two of these gaskets without having any issues with coolant leaks.

Regards, Tom Styskal

Tom, have 2 new gaskets here. Talked to 2 tractor mechanics and the place that did the engine work. Gave me things to try. If this doesn't work out I will contact you. There was some issues with the tops of the bolt holes that could of affected it.
Thanks for your reply.

Tom, I would like to get one of those gaskets with the copper in your picture.  I can provide my address to you.  Struggling to not have coolant slow leaking out the manifold side of my WD-45 that I am overhauling. Thank you.

You must use some type of sealant around all the water holes and around the O.D. of the gasket. A dry gasket on a 70 year old block will leak somewhere guarenteed.

Dr what do you recommend to use? Not doing this now but maybe in the future.

In recent years, I have used what is referred to as Hylomar anaerobic sealer, blue in color. Loctite #555354. Rub it on with your finger thinly. Stay back a little from any hole. I do the block first, set on the gasket, then do the top of the gasket. Block and head must be clean.

This what we used on Chev V8 motors with the stainless steel gasket or shim. It was about .011 thick if my memory is ok. Sprayed both sides of gasket, let it get tacky and assemble. Never any problems.
Two weeks ago I did a head gasket on a 1955 IH pickup.  BD240 in-line 6 cyl. I used a felpro gasket but different from what I am used to. Was stainless on the bottom and felpro blue composition on top. I sprayed the bottom and put it together. Sure hope it works. I am going to try to get the hylomar stuff that Doc is recommending. 😀

In 2024 I had a problem with a Reliance head gasket on my WD45 when I put the engine back together, it leaked coolant all around the head as fast as I poured it in. I pulled the head back off and measured the gasket with a micrometer, and the fire rings were .010" thicker than the rest of the gasket AFTER having been torqued down. I got a Fel Pro gasket set, HS7514S, installed it dry, and have had no leaks. The head had been machined when I had it off the first time in 2021, and that time it went back together with a dry Reliance gasket and had no problems. I wouldn't have pulled the head again but a liner O ring split and I was getting coolant in the oil. The fire rings on the Fel Pro were only .006" thicker than the gasket before installing. I wish I had checked the Reliance gasket before but I didn't anticipate that kind of problem. I have another Fel Pro on the shelf for when I get around to working on the WC engine hopefully soon. Good luck with yours!

Yes. Any felpro composite goes together dry here. The IH one was stainless on bottom so just sprayed the bottom half.  Hopefully will be good! 😀 I like the felpro gaskets.

Doc recommended Hylomar several years ago and I have used it since then.

I was recently helping a friend assemble an engine and couldn't find Hylomar locally. When I Googled it, I came up with this Permatex product that says "Compare to Hylomar Universal Blue". (I'm thinking maybe Permatex has acquired the company that makes Hylomar because they are using the Hylomar brand name on their packaging?)

We used it on his engine and I haven't heard of any leaks yet.
