My area soils would never allow even a good WD-45 to pull 4 x 14's in second gear. Pulling in low gear would eventually yield to drive line issues if used enough. The D-17 S3 would get-her-done!! The Traction Booster system, if adjusted properly, (big spring tension/link rod length/ drop rate) is far better on that longer fully mounted plow than the WD series. Pretty easy to hang 4 to 500 lbs of extra front weight (of some kind) on the nose. 16.9 x 28's at 14 psi and the more fluid the better for rear rubber. An engine that is in good tune and if needed you have the low side of second gear to default to if low 3rd and high 2nd are too much. An extra 100 RPM on the high idle doesn't hurt either !!! Let me know when this will take place and I'll try to stop out. You will have a big smile on your face if everything is working right !!!

I was hoping you would chime in Doc! I know it would be a big load for the 45's and really don't want to do that to them, well, maybe once? I know a couple places where the dirt turns very easy. The series 1 D-17 has Safemark's on it (16.9x28's) that have great tread bars and are full of fluid. So full I don't know how they got that much in them! I have plenty of wheel weights too. Including a pair of Oxnard heavy's. The loose plan If I get there is to put the Safemark's on the series 3. The weight bracket I have is one my Dad made for the 175. I drilled some holes and it now fits WD's and 45's. Would it bolt on a 17? I don't know about the mounting holes in them. If this weather didn't stink so bad I'd go out and check on that, maybe tomorrow?
This is getting me energized! Might have to get that plow in the shop before the snow gets deep. The 856 is ready to leave now so that frees up quite a bit of space. Kenny L saw my post and knew I must be bored. Well, as bored as I get anyway. He called, we talked for an hour and a half! I need to get up that way and reduce his inventory. I've posted 4 videos to YouTube today, two of them have plowing content. One is on a drill press but has quite a bit of Allis project update.

175 weight bracket will not (as it is) fit a D-17. The series 3 would be my choice because I know it has a "rate-of-drop" screw adjustment directly down from the sediment bowl. This really makes the TBoost work better than the WD series. Your old D-17 may have had it added on later in life, but it never had it from the factory. I like SAFEMARK rear tires !!

Hey Mike! Any idea when you might be heading to Kenny's? If next spring/summer, I'd maybe head that way. I haven't been over by him now for a couple of years. I pulled a 4-14 once with my 45 and it was a chore for it. And I've got sand basically. 3 is plenty for it. You've just got too many choices for tractors for what you've got planned. I only have 2 series 1 D-17s, but one has the combine motor in it, but it's got carb problems. Another one of those 'sometime' projects. Take care and LOVE the videos you have posted.

Thanks Ted! We'll have to work on a day to meat at Kenny's. Stable, warmish weather would be good.
I shot a short video of the 74 plow, it is 4-14's. My weight bracket will not work on a 17 as Doc mentioned. I do have LOTS of 1/2"x4" flat stock I could build something out of. Stay tuned, I'll post more plow videos as I get them done.

Just out of curiosity, what's your downside to a D19? I'm not being critical of your opinion whatsoever.
My very first Allis tractor was a D 19, over 30 years ago, which I still have and love. I have a 190 gas snap coupler tractor also, which you mentioned as a potential candidate. That wouldn't disappoint you at all either. Been watching a few of your you tube videos, enjoying them! As Norm Swinford always said, "going orange is going great!" Darrel |

Darrel it's the sleeve issue with the diesels and slow hydraulics. Really don't need any more gas tractors. Guess they are just not my 'thing'.

Latest installment of my plow confusion.
Doc has got me up to speed that the 4 bottom is a 64, not a 74. Makes sense, coulters are from that series. I should have picked up on that. I think I'm going to move the 73 that is sitting by the white truck wheel in the shop today and the 64 up where the 73 is. Edit; I also did a 'Public service announcement' video about getting on and off a 45. Kind of preaching to the choir here as I'm sure most of you guys know how. Probably didn't target that one just right. People that complain probably aren't looking for a way to make it easy?

So, I got plows moved around yesterday and shot some more video but need some more before the next installment of 'plow confusion'. Need to learn how to make a playlist as this is getting kind of long. Heated some of the threads on the last 73 to enter the shop, beaming screw is free, still needs work but is moving.
