New car sales are OFF around here, been on local news as Dealers set up their own discount systems while the producers try other ploys.

HD Trucks are fairing similarly where I am seeing returned to service trucks as my Own that is 20 years old with more and more old cabover and NON Emissions no games engines plying the roadways.  Seems they can work 100-300,000 miles Problem Free where the new stuff barely makes 50-80,000 without some sort of buried glitch that sets them on dealer lots FOR WEEKS at a time awaiting pieces or 'technicians'(Mechanics are slipping away quicker and quicker), seems if not electronic related the Shop 'Techs' cannot find to fix.

Makes cents( sense )  when you look at the price of a new vehicle !!
Really, on TV ... 'up to 10K$ off' the price....., helllo ? so new is 70-100K out the door !!!
Only thing worse than new car sticker shock, is younger generations cannot BUY a HOUSE ( who has $200K for down payment ? ) , pay got gas for car ( $$6/gallon ) , car insurance ( $4K) oh yeah.... go to bank before going to grocery store......

The ENTIRE economy is ........................    ( fill in the blank )

It's not happing anywhere that I see. Maybe even more NEW vehicles now than a few months ago. There is even someone near me that has a NEW 6 door Dodge pickup to pull his new camper that is longer than the 40' trailer I haul my pulling tractors on. Everyone claims the economy is terrible, yet the evidence and reality is just the opposite, people are spending money faster now than ever. No one seems to care about what the cost of anything, and soon we will all be paying the NEW national sales tax on top of all the New import duty taxes with the trade war that this country is about to start with the rest of the world. Be careful what you wish for because we are going to get it.

I was on a panel on rural radio(don't ask me why) and we tried to have an intelligent discussion about the the economy and the deficit. 34 trillion dollars. I think we can all agree that there is fraud, waste and abuse in our federal government but there isn't enough to balance the budget. Someone has to get brave and address entitlements. This is unsustainable. 8 percent of the Christmas shopping this year has been buy now pay later

Just because people BUY something, does NOT mean they have money...

How much credit card debt do Americans have?

Americans’ total credit card balance is $1.166 trillion in the third quarter of 2024, according to the latest consumer debt data from the Federal Reserve Bank of New York. That’s up from $1.142 trillion in the second quarter of 2024 and is the highest balance since the New York Fed began tracking in 1999.

Who the Hell has the money today to buy an 80K-100K friggin' pickup truck? That's insane! They're not selling around here. A lot of fancy pickups sitting on the lots around here with a lot of pollen on them which tells me the dealership doesn't even bother washin' them off anymore! My newest car is an 07'. The rest are older. Another few years, and we could put "QQ" Historic plates on most of em'.  LOL!  Thumbs Up

Not that way down here Steve!, about every other truck you see is a 24 or 25, my 08 is needing some expensive work soon, stopped at both GMC and Ford a few weeks ago, to replace with an equivalent 1 ton is right at $100,000, but they are generous to give me just over $21,000 for my 08 diesel 4 door 4WD with about 98,000 miles!, guess who won't be trading !!!! Got passed this morning by no less than 3 of those stupid cyber trucks!, I wonder how far they'd go with my loaded goose neck on their back and they bring $100 to 125,000 here. Good news, with good credit they'll go 8 years on a loan at GM, probably Ford too!

Those that don't know history are doomed to repeat it. If the economy was truely terrible as those that believe the big liar says, we'd be seeing what happened in the late 1920s & early 30s where no one had a job and no one had any money weather it be cash or credit to spend on anything, everyone would be holding on to anything they had and be happy to have it. instead everyone wants everything NEW and to be the latest and greatest. Just look at Cell phones as an example.  As it is unemployment is at it lowest since WWII and everyone around here seems to be packing into every shopping mall you go by. Nobody is saving, they are of the mindset Spend, Spend, Spend. OnLine retailers are doing a booming business and Walmart, Harbor Freight and Temu are selling cheap Chinese crap like never before.  This country will loose the impending trade war with the rest of the world because very little is made in the USA and Union labor has priced themselves out of business. Look at what the Boeing union just got and Boeing can't even build plane that can stay in the air anymore.

re: Just look at Cell phones as an example.
yup, people gladly pay 1,000s for a product that cost maybe $50 to get into the stores.

CC debt is so high cause the lenders and the guvs  allow it.

as for new trucks on the road, how many are 100% OWNED by their drivers ?? leases do NOT count, NOR do monthly payments....

Need to replace my pickup as it seems RUST has just about claimed all of it , frame up to cab and hood , box floor holes are getting bigger .
Try to find a 2 door long bed truck - dealers don't have them , 3 door / 4 door fill the lots and $70,000 starting price . Ah the new fuel efficient engines that shut down lifters , control fuel and wear out cams . Lot of them on the market as cost to fix exceeds the truck value used .
Found a 2006 - 3/4 ton 4x4 work truck but $13,000 asking price makes me wonder as 120,000 miles on it , yet clean and no rust on body or frame - might have to look at it again .

First, I think the economy is really a mixed bag of signals. Seems like all the time lately one business or another is laying off or closing its door because of financial trouble. The other thing it seems like is business that have survived are selling out because owners are ready to retire and are sick of all the BS. Trucks are a joke; GM had a good v8 starting in the 1950s and 50 years later they manage to screw it up. yea they had the cam shaft issue in the 70s but the new stuff if crap unreliable, too much electronics. Make a v8 with a good roller cam, good flowing heads and a stand-alone fuel injection, that gets 20 mpg in a 1/2-ton pickup. That shouldn't be too much to ask. And why are they having transmission issues? The th350 and 400 were good and the Allison is but they can't make a transmission for a 1/2 ton now. And starting in 2000 they had frames rotting right out from under trucks. THats just GM and I'm a chevy guy, Fords and Ram have their problems also. If they made a good hardworking reliable truck that lasts a person could justify a little higher price, but these new trucks will get scrapped still looking good waiting for someone to fix the electrical problem. New Tractors the same way. My 1999 has electric door locks they were great when they worked but the driver's side no longer works, at least there is still a button to lock, and I can use the key to unlock the outside. What do you do with new vehicles with no key to unlock them? what if the battery is dead? MY wife just bought a new little SUV. Her last car was 20 years old. All the little toys are neat on this new 1 but ask me about them in 10 years and I will give you my real opinion. I looked at the battery one day, you can find it and see it, but they have more crap piled on it they make it, so you don't want to change it. And back to the economy used to be a few years ago before covid you cut eat lunch at places for $5.00 now even fast-food places unless you eat off the kid's menu you can't leave there for under $10.00 and if you sit down some where you should leave them a really good tip, I'm not against tipping for good service and a friendly smile. But my income hasn't doubled. So, the alternative now is go home and eat and the restaurant doesn't get my business.

Another thing they went to crap on is all the new diesels. Yes.  I know federally regulated required to burn Def. Just a ton more expense and problems, and less fuel economy, they can make enough horsepower to wreck the rest of the truck. There again who wants one and a used one only way to make it any good is do a delete but that's illegal. Go back to the lb7 Duramax, 7.3 power stroke, or a 12 valve Cummins. good mileage reliable and they made pretty good power. Sure, someone will argue not enough.

My last 2 pickup trucks, thing 1 and thing 2, both red so won't confuse our sweetcorn customers, came from fertilizer companies that were upgrading their fleet. I like them cause they are a whole lot cheaper. They come ready to pull with heavy cushion bumpers, a hitch in the bed for a gooseneck, good maintenance records, and who cares if someone bumps it with a cart or door dings it, just adds character. I like not having truck payments and they aren't much more rusted out than any others of their era. My first one, thing 1, had 160000 miles on it when I got it and now it has 280000 and got the second one, thing 2, recently for a backup cause thing 1 has some frame concerns but since I have the backup I'll run thing 1 till it drops and it hasn't had the easiest life on the farm.

The farm economy is in a recession. The rest of the economy is propped up by a government spending 2 trillion dollars more than it takes in.

Generally dealers from W STL County to CoMO are having to run major discounts programs STILL NOT Selling as once had.  Know several in auto world in shops and dealerships, Older machines are the norm not the new buys. Used Pickups and Cars are losing the resale pricing seen thru Covid, dropping hard.

It does seem like the new car lots are filling up with new vehicles this fall. Are they finally getting all their missing computer chips and getting sent out to dealers.

Everything up here has slowed down. New car lots are full of cars and trucks. Pick what you want and incentives offered. Low or zero interest if you are financing. A large part of the population here (at least the middle age crowd) is near broke! Due to houses and vehicles priced way too high. Most of the old crowd is ok as houses are paid for. Funny thing is I could not afford to buy my own house back at today's value. Smile

I tried to buy a new pickup but of the 17 local dealers, NONE had the truck I wanted. Oh well....

In the meantime, I'm fed up with 'them' saying ' it's  high interest  rates' that is the problem ! When I bought my house, the mortgage was 11.5%. Yes, Eleven and a half percent. $1500 a month,5 year term, paid the note off in 2 1/4 years  without having a paycheck.
Like Ed says , it's the SELLING price that's the problem......

Jay, most of them have only 4 door short beds, I was looking for a one ton 4 door long bed with single rear tires, the two dealers I stopped at near home both tried to tell me that “you don’t want that”, I told them I’ve had two of them, and that’s exactly what I want! They don’t have a clue about what people that work a truck need.

Yet they WILL offer a F550 DRW with a Crew Cab NO BED for about the same price as a Fully Equipped SD F250 Crew Long Bed.
