Neighbor across the street is having hers replaced. Possible storm damage from September? Hard working guys. Start about 8 AM and quit at dark. They took the roof down to the plywood. Not sure why? Hope they're paid well.

Sometimes they have to take it to the wood, Id slap tin down and put the screws to it,, what color were these guys ?

It’s best to tear off down to the decking than do a nail over, less weight on the structure and you can spot any weak decking. Helene really wreaked havoc on a lot of places in the CSRA.I have a replacement coming up and plan to use metal roofing but I am waiting for a good hailstorm so I can get some of the money back that I have paid to the insurance company over the years. 
Just an old country boy saved by the grace of God.

Local ordnance here allows for only 2 layers of shingles. Must be stripped to plywood sheathing.
 5 years ago mine got to looking bad. The local family I hired started on it, called me at work. The top layer had been put on with no repair to damage to first layer, tar paper & plywood underneath.
 Mine was stripped to the plywood and some plywood got replaced and a new type of membrane put on instead of tar paper, new metal edging, ridge row, vents and shingles. It's got a 40 year written warranty from manufacturer of the membrane, edging/ridge row and shingles. I was 65 when roof replaced so I'd be 105 when warranty expires. 
 Now if the original aluminum siding (color failing) and a few remaining windows would magically get replaced, they like me were new in 1955.

Just had mine done 3 weeks ago from HAIL STORM last year . Ended up replacing all the plywood on roof - all the sheathing showed weak spots and some rot . 
 Class 4 shingles - suppose to reduce insurance costs as stand up to hail . 
Hmm crew of 10 individuals on roof - none spoke English , started stripping sheathing at end where dumpster was - managed to step through onto vaulted ceiling while carrying junk to dumpster . Next did other side of roof - same thing start on dumpster end and work to other end of house - stepped through another side of vaulted ceiling .So have almost matching holes in ceiling across from each other .
 House is 3 / 12 pitch on one side 3 1/2 pitch on other side so Ice and Water membrane required on full roof under new shingles . 30 x 80 ft of decking sheets. 
 Last time i did roof myself and replaced 20 sheets of plywood and moved all material to reinsulate full ceiling area from top as most of house is faulted ceiling .
  Had adjuster back out to check shop roof metal sheeting 32 x 45  - nails popped on more than 1/2 of roof from rebound from hail . Says 14 hail dents or more per square so full roof needs replacing along with all purlins on trusses . Also insulation needs to be replaces so he said new foam insulation and remove fiberglass . Back shop roof 22 x 32 also damaged and needs replacing along with insulation .

On new house opted for Tin Roof, almost went to Standing Seam but expense was severe so went with essentially barn tin.  Sheathing was required at 3/4", T&G, put Titanium Paper on that then set to placing sheared to length tin only hand cuts for valleys.  Not unhappy still.  Three neighbors had Shingles replaced Hail Damage, all noted underlayment sheathing damage where had to patch in sheathing(1/2") some of which was less than ten years since last roof.  Ours been on since 2014, have had a few screws walk up but watch for that and was always at Two Sheet Overlap, installer tried to use a no boot method on Soil Stacks that failed at 9 years where those have boots now and no further seepage, {and YES, Knocking on my Wooden Head}.  Several Hail storms where not yet seeing any damage, severe wind in this area yet no lifting, very satisfied with Tin Roof.  Initial Expense is not a issue if it does outlast a shingle roof.

Several years ago, the roof on my house was replaced with a standing seam roof.  Absolutely no regrets.  Extremely happy with this roof.  No more leaks. No more having to nail down or replace shingles.  
The roof has a texture (crinkle) finish to the paint.  This paint has less glare, better scratch resistance, better traction and better traction. No annoying glare as most metal roofs do.  Every year, I brush the chimney. It is great to be able to walk on the roof and not worry about sliding off. As with any standing seam roof, do NOT walk on the top of the seams.
The cost for the texture paint was only a couple hundred dollars more than a conventional stand seam roof paint system.  
The roofing contractor I used has been in the business for a good many years and has an impeccable reputation.  He was thrilled with this roof.

Yeah Hubert, storm clean up is ongoing here. There's a collection site nearby and it's busy 7 days a week. We finally had our house repaired last week. Glad to have it done! Lots of good roof info guys! Thanks
