Just looking for some advice here. I found a d14 with an Allis 400 series loader for sale locally that interests me. I’m thinking it could be my full time loader tractor and I can finally remove the crappy New Idea loader from my d17. What’s everyone’s take on a d14 with a fully hydraulic loader? It has the front mounted pump which is a plus. No factory power steering but it has a Char-Lynn torque generator installed for the power steering, I have no experience with this setup. I mostly use my loader with pallet forks for loading and unloading things and the bucket for plowing snow.

The 400 loader is one of AC's best loaders.  However, without power steering, your arms will get tired pretty quick.  If I did buy that 14, the first thing I would do is pull the front axle and rebuild the pivot assembly.  Even without a loader, I have seen them get pretty worn after 60+ years.  A heavy 400 loader definitely would not help either.

Checking the wheel bearings, tie rods and spindle bushings would also be highly recommended.

What are you planning to lift with it?  The loader will probably handle it, but I would be more concerned about the tractor.

Lift the occasional piece of equipment that I buy or sell. Seems that I’m always moving around hay racks to a different running gear or a gravity box onto a different gear. Those are probably the heavier things, I don’t do round bales so nothing like that. I’m guessing it’s going to get light in the rear end fairly quickly.

That 400 loader is excellent, my dad has one that he's used for over 25 years. As DSeries 4 has said, you really do need good working power steering. The Char-Lynn torque generator power steering set up is unfamiliar to me? If that's good and works well, you should be OK. I have one D14 with the Wagner loader (and factory power steering) but the Allis 400 is far superior.

I really don’t want the loader on my D17, I use it for planting and tillage and have to take the loader off for all of that (I don’t like it bouncing around on the front and it steers like s$&t with the loader on). I would really like to just leave it on a tractor and was hoping this D14 would fit the bill.

The Model 414 and 415 are great loaders. The front mounted hyd. pump gives you live hydraulic for the loader and operates completely independent of the Tractors hydraulic.

The big concern with the D-14 would be 2nd and 3rd gear jumping.

Being a loader Tractor would mean a lot of gear changing.

On my 415 I installed a full flow PH8 style Oil Filter on the return line.

Kit is available from NAPA.

One thing for SURE... do NOT try to turn while standing still !! Always be in motion !! #3 D-14 had a 'real' loader and BOTH new front rims were destroyed that way. I don't know if A-C sold 'loader' rims ( stronger ) ? Pretty sure someone here will know though !

One old farmer that lived over a 100 years ago made a statement I think of often "There is nothing so good that it can't be abused". One thing that helps with front rims on loader tractors is to have them properly inflated for the job. I have heavy duty 7.50 x 16" tires with between 50 & 60 PSI on my loader tractor. Before I got my D14 with the Wagner loader somebody bent the front axle somewhat from over lifting. As much as you wish to use your loader don't forget to use your head also...

I've gotten a lot of use loading/unloading with a 3pt pig pole.

Last project was a soda pop machine. Moving pallets is challenging, but ropes and chains.

D-14's are a handy loader tractor. And with a 414 loader is even better. Two weak points: #1. keep the front axle as NARROW as possible. #2. remember the foot clutch is only a 9 inch diameter clutch and will not take much abuse.

With the way the transmission shifts and the front end not being very heavy the D14 is way down on the list of older tractors from the 60's and 70's I'd want to have as a loader tractor.Especially if its been used as a loader tractor very long,about guaranteed the front end will be severely worn and the transmission gears will be rough

I use a D14 on a small hobby farm.   About ten years ago Jack Profitt (Kentucky) installed a Charllynn  Power Steering I found; it works GREAT.  Herb(GA)

As the Dr. mentioned, don't be aggressive with the foot clutch. Use it when changing gears only. Otherwise use the Power Director for easing in to a pile to load the bucket.
Power Director runs in oil and last forever.
Build yourself a weight that hooks to the Lift Arms and Snap Coupler.
That way you will have a Counter Balance to take some weight off the front Steering, as well as providing needed Traction.
